At what age should people stop driving?

Because of things I have experienced on the road and even within the neighborhood with old aged drivers. I know there is a lot of old people that drives better than youngers but no matter how much experience...age is age... For example no one is gonna have the same reflexes at 68 like they had at 55 or 45 and so on...

For the safety of everyone...At what age you guys think people should stop driving?

By the way...I am not trying to pick on the older folks on the forum. I know there is a lot of people over 60 with more energy and healthier than younger guys. I just want to know different opinions. I have seen a lot of crazy stuff elder people do on the road and dont even realized they are doing it. I know a lady that is 90.....she is a sweetheart....I see her almost twice a month in the office and ask her everytime who brings her and she says "I drive a 2001 Chevy Malibu".....lol....I think is kinda funny but at the same time...dangerous!

Now that is an interesting poll. But hard to set a specific age on when someone is no longer capable of driving. Who determines capability? Their doctor, them, the police? I would say that after 75, you have to be tested annually with the local department of public safety to ensure you are still capable of driving and renew your license annually with documentation from medical or mental personnel stating that you have no existing conditions that would preclude you from driving. On a personal note, in 1997, my 80 year old dad drove his small chevy pickup (which he was not supposed to be driving), took a wrong turn down a muddy road, got stuck, and was missing for two days before we found him. Fortunately we found him alive. So, there is certainly grounds for concern over the ability and capability of elderly people to drive, so thanks JAC for a good topic of discussion.

During morning between 8 -10am is when i notice many old drivers, traffic is slow if you are near a Denny's or ihop.. LoL.

I just realized that the traffic accidents that I'm involved were caused by inexperienced drivers. Last month I got rear ended by a 21 yrs old when I was making a Left Turn "Yield". So which is really safer? to drive along with old drivers? or along with 40's below.. Causes of accidents are DUI, agressiveness, speeding, show-0ff, middle age and teens scores the 90 percent.

But i won't forget when an old lady enter the exit of a paking lot and i don't have space to backup because someone is following close. Good, that I was quick with my high beam and horn :lookout:

Totally agree with you I think at a certain age the elder people should be tested and renewing the licenses every year or at least every 2 years....

Very good points... I think that agressive drivers are more dangerous than elder slow drivers...totally agree with that. But for the same reason they are so many crazy people out there on the streets..that a dont think my 90 year old client could escape from a young agressive driver. I wouldnt like my mom when she turns 80 driving out there in that concrete jungle with all these crazy wild drivers that think the world is theirs. I am also thinking and concern about the safety of the elder people.

I agree on when the capabilities simply are fading and people say at 68 should be tested every two years but it's a hard law to implement since most voters are older and are at or approaching that dillema in the next 10-15 years.

Your last sentence may be even more reason to do something now - there will be more older drivers on the road as the baby boomers get up there in the next 10 years or so.

I like the idea of a bi-annual written and road test beginning in the late 60's. At 75 or 76 begin an annual check. I fly with some guys who are into their 80's and they're great. I fly with a couple that have trouble that I consider age related; they are in the late 60's.


There's no question that physical reaction time goes down with age; so can situational awareness in some. With experience (age) comes wisdom and in many cases no loss of situational awareness. The point at which those three factors intersect, when compared with a specific task, determines the correct answer, IMHO.

There is no possible way to determine a single age, as people vary. Periodic retesting is the only way.

Also, the baby boomers ARE going to be getting up there.. and they are going to dominate the ballot box. Good luck getting legislation which limits them passed.

He's been doin' that awhile. That's why he opted for 4wd on the old Mazda when he bought at a youthful 63.

His new car list read like this:
1) Good ground clearance for curb hopping.
2) Incredible style and good looks.
3) 4wd just in case the curb is a big one!

As a Motorcyclist, I have to watch out for far more dumbass young drivers, then I do older drivers. They're usually on a cellphone, texting, or trying to impress their buddy's with their supposed driving skill, etc.

Based on the driving skill of the average teen that I see driving, it would be a great idea. At least if the goal is indeed increased safety on the roads.

BTW, I'm nowhere near any of the ages listed in the poll.

It's not the age, it's how people drive. Yes, there are slow pokes on the fast lane or slow as hell on two-way roads. What i don't like is peeps on the cell phone and texting, and still slow on the road.
