so many people want to take older generations off the road, but wait till you get there, & you have no one to do things for you, no one to drive or take you to the doctors office, shopping, what ever. some seniors really rely on they're car for transportation so they can do the things that need to be done. yea, i know sometimes you have to watchout for them but remember ,theres alot of who youngsters who not only make rolling stops, but far exceed the speed limits around towns & highways. i know people in there 80s that need to drive, my folks are 2 of them. hell, im 55 now, & someones going to want to make it hard for me at 65? most young people think they drive great, but i say theres alot at all ages that dont. so its not fair to only pick on the seniors, just wait, we all will be there someday, some just sooner than others. just my 2c

Older Drivers

Good luck with proposing any "age limit" or testing older drivers! The AARP would run any such politician out of town on a rail. Old geezers are the fastest-growing and often the wealthiest segment of the population - and they vote in a greater percentage than any other age group.

I know some old fogies who are decent drivers, as well as "young whippersnappers" who are not worth a crap behind the wheel. It isn't the age that matters - but the skill, experience and judgment.

The two biggest offenses/infractions are driving in the wrong lane and failure to use directional signals -- committed by many people of all ages. If cops would enforce both of these laws, the accident rate would plummet, there would be less road rage and traffic would flow much, much more smootly. {but that would be politically incorrect}

"If I passed you on the right, you're in the wrong lane!"

i agree jeff kleb! Hell JAC, whats your next post going to be, which race's of people aren't good drivers or which ones shouldnt be allowed to drive?

Hey chaz...take it easy my dear good friend...like I said I am not trying to pick on the elderly drivers..I am just concern about it. And I know a lot a old people have no one to do things for them. I see it every day where I work. Thats why I am concern. I was the other day drinving towards an intersection at a very busy area and this car was in the middle I guess waiting to turn to their left.... my light was red at that time..then in changed to green and the car didn't move until my light was red again...It was a elder lady. I didn't get mad nor nothing because I know it was an old lady and she was problaby confuse...but what about it wasn't me and it was one of those people that dont give a care and just run her over because they had the green t go?....thats what I am talking about. I was hoping no one on the other three streets hits her just to be mean and then say ..."I had the green"

It is just a poll to discuss the topic and give different opinions...nothing personal....

i understand JAC, dont forget i was young once, but it can be a very touchy issue. one thing i can tell ya is a when someones in they're 30s, that persons ideas or opinions will be different when or if they get to be 65 or older. what im saying is , if its considered ok to voice a opinion on " at what age does a person becomes a bad driver", then maybe what was said in my last responce is allowable also, or how overweight someone can be before they're lic. is yanked, or no one on disability can drive, what about men vs women drivers, the list goes can go on. but i dont think so! talk about opening a can of worms, ahhh,..... what were we talking about? sorry, sometimes senility sets in. not to worry.

"They're usually on a cellphone, texting, or trying to impress their buddy's with their supposed driving skill, etc.

How about raising the legal driving age to 21. :D"

You know I hate to say it but if they raised the driving age to 21 that would just mean that at 21 they would be just as inexperienced as they would be at 16 cause they would still have had little to no driving experience. So that wouldn't really help anything. Also how could they drive off to college along with other things along those lines?:ybrick:

JAC, dont take what i said the wrong way, we are buds, its just that on top of age theres just so many things that might be used to keep a person from driving, ( unfortunatetly, i may fit into some of them,) that it would be very hard if not impossible to figuire out where to draw the line, since many things can be considered.

Yes, they would still be inexperienced drivers. BUT, they would be more mature people, and less likely to make some of the common 'immature teen driver' mistakes.

I'm not pushing for legislation on such a measure. But if road safety is the goal, it makes more sense from what I have observed over my driving/riding career, then some arbitrary upper age limit to legally drive.

Any doubt call your insurance agent. Ask them to quote a 19year old in a 2009 'vette and then run a quote for a 69year old in the same car...

i'm pretty sure the only person/thing that will get low rates in a Vette is the STIG.

I would add running red lights/stop signs. As I've traveled about the country, I've seen that traffic lights are becoming more like suggestions than traffic control devices; it's not unusual to have the light turn green and yet 3-5 cars still go through their red light. Very different from Europe where the red light means STOP and people obey the law.

I suppose that since we can make a right turn on red after stopping, why not be able to go straight as well?

As for STOP signs, aren't they optional if there is a thin white line around the outer edge?

:D:lmao:

Stop signs are yield signs unless others are at the intersection. I dont really think anyone can argue this because most drivers do rolling stops if it is safe to.

One thing to consider is that people are ignoring stop signs & other traffic control devices as municipalities are using them solely as cash cows. Rochester, NY is installing stoplight cameras, and they've admitted that it's just a revenue scheme.

Periodic retesting, with increasing frequency as age increases is a good idea. But steps have to be taken so that it too isn't just used as a cash cow. I can't speak for other states' road tests, but back in the dark ages, when I took mine, they tested my ability to park, and drive in a straight line on a clear sunny day. This is not a road test, it's a cash cow.

In CT i didnt even have to parrarel park.

Just at a set interval. It would be kind of mean toward old folks to increase the frequency as you got older. Just make everyone take a driving exam every 5 or 10 years.

They dont require this on the Texas driving test either and everytime I go to downtown Houston, it shows. None of those idiots can parallel park. Hell, I still see most people trying to pull in head first instead of back in. Haha!

Didn't read through all the responses...

My answer?
autocross (or at least car control clinic)

If you can't post a reasonable time then it shows you do not have the reactions or capability to operate a vehicle properly. This should be regardless of age. There might be quite a few people of many ages without a license. The DMV test is a complete joke.

The other half mentioned is responsibility/attentiveness. Unfortunately, that's not as easy to evaluate.

P.S. A couple years ago, I watched an 80+ year old man try to park his boat of a Lincoln in a parking garage, and he hit the wall no less than 4 times while trying to back it in. I wanted to walk over and take his license away from him.
