ATRAC kicking in after new wheels

Hey all,

A bit ago, I upgraded to some 285/70/17 tires. Ever since, I've had issues when accelerating while turning (90* turns or more, usually) with the ATRAC kicking in.

I'm guessing the additional rim diameter is screwing with how ATRAC calculates if a wheel is slipping... I just don't know what to do about it.

Ideas?

Are you sure you're not just feeling the tires rub? I would think that would be the case with 285s.

Definitely not. I get the whole ATRAC warning beep, throttle kill, and ABS activation.

The firestone's I have only rubbed a little on the front of the wheel well, and I already pushing that panel forward a ways to prevent that.

are you saying that you hear atrac trying to kick in when you make a 90% turn? sort of a rat tat tat ? if not & its a beeping sound instead & a power cut, thats the vsc, look up zero piont calibration it may help.

Hmm... it's not a complete power cut... just that slight modulation. I thought that was ATRAC.... but maybe I'll look up VSC to be sure.

ATRAC will only kick in in 4LO unless you did the by pass mod. Most likely is the VSC kicking in. I get it too if I am going to fast around a bend. Just do the calibration thingy, which I still have yet to do.

Not being rude so don't take it that way, but this is incorrect as I understand. ATRAC isn't only active in 4low.

I just didn't want a noob reading and believing this was the case with what I (think) is incorrect info. Just fyi.

Do a zero point calibration. The new ride height isn't sitting well with the stored values for the yaw rate accelerometer. As a result, it thinks you're on the verge of tipping over, due to higher center of gravity. Do the zero point calibration, and all will be well.

Well I'm trying to do the zero point calibration, but I can't get the CSV light to go into its blinking stage.

I'm looking at a few different sets of instructions, so I'm not sure if I'm doing things correctly.

I'm basically starting on page 7 of the pdf I attached. Steps 1-8 seem to go just fine. But when I turn the ignition to "on" for step 10, the VSC light never starts blinking like step 11 says it should.

Did anything change with the DLC port from the 03 runner to the 06 (my year)? Any other ideas?

Mikey is correct!! Stanley someone is going to read what you "understand" or "think" and believe that as true when in fact it is not.

A-TRAC is only available for use in 4lo and < 4 mph, also it does not just kick in automatically it is turned on manually. See page 230 (for genV's) in the owners manual and also check out this thread from Toyota120.com. You can also Google A-TRAC for lots of info on Toyota's Active Traction Control System

Hope it helps.

@OP, The zero point calibration should solve your problem

:rtfm: Just messing.

Remember that TRAC is different from ATRAC

Well you're both wrong... Qjake - get your facts straight before mocking me, because this is still wrong.

This thread was posted in a 4th gen section, and I see you must have a 5th and are referring to a 5th...

''Do a google of of it, and you might be surprised. Hopefully this helps.''

Not "mocking" you bro :nono: just don't want "some noob" taking what you think for fact! I've posted links that support what I've said, please show some facts that support your understanding. I've certainly been wrong before and may be here but I use my A-TRAC frequently and have done my research so that I use it properly.

FYI the A-TRAC system in the 4th gen and in the 5th gen are the same system :boink:

Also we are talking about A-TRAC not Trac, these are two completely different systems!

I'm wasting my time here... First of all, thank you for your link, because it proved yourself wrong...

I read your post after midnight last night with a 7:00am flight today... Now on my Evo while riding in our shuttle bus for some meetings..

However in addition to what you posted, I found this: www.toyota-4runner.org/4th-gen-t4rs/2388-4-wheel-low-v8.html

ATRAC is always active until like 40mph and until a certain rpm. It does seem to get more ''aggressive'' in 4low, but to say under 4 mph, and only in 4low is just not-not right.

I really don't feel like arguing though, and don't really have time to care frankly. I was being nice and trying to help originally ''bro''. :nono:

then please explain why in both the above links i posted it states atrac is always active, but not always on, like when going over about 3000 rpm & does get slightly aggressive so in 4lo. ha, stan beat me to it. http://www.toyota120.com/forum/showthread.php?t=4565 http://www.toyota-4runner.org/4th-gen-t4rs/5036-how-does-atrac-work-3.html

Thx Chaz! Here's another previous discussion as well.

I'll admit that I don't know all here... Soooo much conflicting info out there.

Edit: looks like we're posting the same stuff! :D
