Audio Questions..

So I did some searching on the 3rd gen section, and turned up nothing specific. I know some of you guys have done some pretty solid audio mods on your trucks. I am looking at the Alpine ICS-X7HD as a headunit. Alpine has a great interface with the smartphones. Here is the real question that I am getting to though, I can find front replacement speakers that fit, but I cant find any to fit the back door. Does anyone know what size the ones in the back door are, or what the modification process is to get them in?

4" in your 97, but Toyota uses speakers with 3 mounting screws from the factory, so you're best off making your own Mounting plats out of MDF and either using a 4" or 5.25" speaker.
 
You will pull out the stock rear speakers to be 4'' (pathetic) 5.25'' speakers will fin in perfectly and you can run 6.5'' too as most of do on here. Depending on what type of 6.5 speaker you get some of the magnets might be too big, so you would have to do some modding. I run kicker CS series 6 1/2 in the rear and they fit in just fine and sound really good! Also throw a sub in there, it will make hella difference!

Did you have to make a mounting bracket for your rear speakers? What did you make it out of? Toyota really put 6 3/4" speakers up front and 4" in the back? Who thought that was a good idea? I am starting to see a trend, its the same way in my Tundra, big up front, small in the back.

Rear speakers don't make that much of a difference in all honesty, most people in the audio world (including me) run no rear speakers at all. Be careful with the moutning depth of the speakers you choose, the window doesn't leave much depth in the back doors.
 
I 2nd this ^ also you hear like 85% of whats playing from the front speakers. Upgrade your front speakers and throw a sub in the back and you will be happy

So suggestions on a safe mounting depth? My runner goes off the beaten path, as well as my DD. I have to be able to listen to music and the NHL network on Sirius...yes I am that lame... So, yeah, what would you suggest as a safe depth range?

No sub though...my dog and gear will always be going in the back. Unless at some point I decide to fab something up for it. Too early in the build for a sub.

Been a long time since I measured it, but I want to say it was under 2", you'll probably have to pull the door panel and measure yourself just to make sure.
 
Will do, I will get it measured and all once I get back.

I am still open to any other suggestions that anyone else may have.
 
My Dodge Ram has 6x9's in the doors and 6 1/2 inch behind the seats. You hear what your sitting beside first unless you fade and balance it.

Of you read my build the audio is on page 1. I've also got an alpine setup. Quite happy with it.

Also if you read the tutorial and documentation sticky you will see an audio section that should be helpful.

Check out powered subs. I've got a powered 8" under my drivers seat. It adds plenty of low end without being ridiculous, and I didn't lose any cargo room. I added that instead of worrying about the rear speakers. I upgraded the front for and tweeters, and everything sounds great.

I have some pics and details in my build thread.
 
Got 6.5" components in the front doors and 5.25" in the rear doors.
Nothing special to modify. Used the supplied adapter rings.

I ran the rear speaker lines down the center, terminating under the passenger seat. There I have Speakon® connectors, and can attach extension cables and a pair of box speakers. I can recommend the JBL Control 5 speakers for an amazing amount of outdoor sound from the 45WRMS(@4ø) head unit.
Normally I have the cheap plastic JBL Control 1s in the back area.

Echoing earlier comment from Millerad1651: get a powered under-seat sub. I'm running one of these:

Sound Ordnance B-8PTD

and it's been fantastic. Fits under the driver's seat easily, adds a nice tight kick. Crutchfield has them on sale for $149 every so often too (seemed like every couple of weeks when I was shopping.)
 
Now here is a question I am posing for the masses...not trying to get flamed or start any wars here. We all know there is brand loyalty out there.

So here goes, comparing headunits, looking for something solid. Need some input on what you guys are running.

Kenwood DNX691 HD
Pros- iPhone 5 series compatible/will play audio and video from phone/Garmin GPS/Traffic updates/22 watts RMS/XM capable.

Cons- $825.00/need special cable for video from iPhone to HU/have to buy XM adapter/external bluetooth mic for handsfree

Alpine ICS-X7HD
Pros- iPhone 6 and 6 plus compatible/will play audio and video from phone/$599.00/XM Capable

Cons- Unsure if iPhone 5+ will have ability to play video/unsure if there will be map updates/18 watts RMS

I mean I am sure that I am missing some other ones....just wondering if anyone is running either one of these or has any input on the two. I am pretty sure this is the finals for HU selection.
