Australia Travel Tips

Hi all, I know that there are couple of fellow T4R owners in the Land Down Under (should I not use that phrase?) and wondering if they can provide any good ideas for what to see. I will be going in a couple of weeks for work in Melbourne but I am going to be staying for an extra 9 days to play Right now my plan is to explore Melbourne over the weekend and at evening for the 6 days we are there and then rent a car and head along the coast to Sydney. My plan is to camp most of the way as hotels are incredibly expensive it seems. I am going to be starting out from Melbourne on Sept. 27, I have been told this is a break for some schools as it will be spring down there so getting a site may be more difficult than expected.

Anyone have suggestions on what to see or stay along that way? I think I will be taking the A1 up to Sydney and maybe return via 31.

it depends... what are you into?

when I was there in Sydney.. I went to Blue mountain... gorgeous..

also.. on Sundays in Sydney, there is the $2 dollars ticket that includes boat rides, trains and buses.. best part is unlimited rides till the end of the day..

also.. is an slight walk from the harbor but there is an street food gatherings..

the last three are from the towers of the bridge.. is an $5 dollars entrance fee but is pretty unique.. I wish I had my slr back then.. the view from the top is amazing..

In Melbourne though.. I only had an few days to visit... so bare with me..

Penguins, Phillip Island, Victoria, Australia

is an little drive.. but seeing the little penguins at night was an unique experience..

Wow, great pictures. Thanks for the tips.

I'm hoping to get to see some of Melbourne including the penguins the first week. I hope to head out the Great Ocean Road a bit and plan sightseeing for after work too.

I would have to say that generally I shy away from cities. Although I'm sure Melbourne and certainly Sydney are unique I would rather spend my time (and money!) getting to see more of the country which is why I plan on driving along the coast visiting some of the parks. I also hope to drive back to Melbourne on an inland route so I can get to see more. That said I do want to get to see Sydney but isn't my main focus.

I do want to see the Blue Mountains, I'm guessing that is something that would truly require more than a day to appreciate right? I love hiking and seeing landscapes so I would get stuck every couple of hundred yards to take pictures. (I have a Canon SX1, not quite an SLR but has same chip and is easier to carry instead of several lenses on the bike/hiking).

I will probably pass on the bridge thing, not so good with the heights......

I highly recommend the penguins.. is an exceptional experience.. you sit down and wait for an little bit.. all of an sudden.. they start coming out from the ocean and back on the beaches.. I would have taken some pictures but they don't allow it.. another thing too.. bring some plastic bags or something.. cause the seats could be wet at times..

I also went to Cairns and did some scuba diving too.. reason is I have family in Sydney.. thus I didn't have to spend any money on lodging..

definitely go see the Blue Mountains.. I spend an day there and still couldn't see everything.. especially at night when the sun is going down, is gorgeous.. I have an Casio Ex-Z400 when I was there.. but now I have an Canon 7D.. the difference of an point and shoot to an DSLR is astounding.

The bridge is nice.. the view from up top is unique + I'm not afraid of heights..
