Autbond's '06 SE Build Thread

Autbond,

That's insanely awesome!!

I told my girlfriend that your 4Runner is originally white and she goes: "Oh?!?!"
:lmao:

Please tell us about the washing progress haha and see if you can get a picture of the engine bay.

Haha, yea thanks for the props. My gf was with me here (hates being in the truck when it gets stuck though) as well as a couple other buddy's in the back when I went into that hole. It was a lot of fun, and surprisingly the engine bay really wasn't that bad. I am washing it fully tomorrow and possibly shampooing the inside also; so I will take pics after she's clean.

I went with the 2.0 kit just because I talked to Mark at OW and he said that if I am not running a roof rack and a lot of extra weight (like a rear bumper) that the 2.5 kit is actually a little stiff. I am planning on doing a rear bumper eventually but he also said that I can upgrade it when it comes to that point. Also, another reason to get the 2.5 is if you are performing high speed runs out in the desert, which I am obviously not in AL. I am def looking forward to putting it on though, it is going to be a whole new truck from what everyone says.

Nice, did you go with the 2.0 or the 2.5 kit from them?

Here are a couple I am going to get some better ones but my camera died on me so it won't be back for a month. In the meantime the iPhone 4 takes pretty decent pics. These are on low quality though to make it easier to post them on here. Sorry about the sideways coilover pic

Pics from the past mud bog; I am done with the mudding, or at least this stuff. This is before the OW kit.

Those are the 2.0's I assume? Those fronts are really cranked and they aren't even broken in yet. Was the rear installed in the "after" picture? Looks like you only got about 1" of lift.

Regardless, you went with a great kit.

They are the 2.0's. They actually are not cranked out, I lowered them back down because the alignment was going to be way off if I didn't. The rear was installed in the after picture, yea I probably did only get an inch in the back. I had a Cornfed 3/2 in the before pic so I wouldn't expect to get more than another inch out of this lift. Question, how much can I expect it to "settle" and how long does this take?

good call with the mud bogging retirement, i say a little mud is okay but what you did was crazy and im sure fun as hell but i just think your truck is tooooo nice to do that. its looking good, and those coilovers do look super cranked. how much space is between where the top of the coil is to the very top thread? in inches

I mean I don't understand what yall are saying about the coilovers looking super cranked. It is a 0"-3.5" adjustable coilover and I believe it is at 3". The OW 2.5 kit is adjustable from 1"-3.5" so I guess that is why that kit might not look as cranked at 3-3.5" as this one does. Is it bad to have them cranked up? How much "settling" am I looking at?

i dont know about it beeing bad to crank them up as long as its not a rediculous amount and puts you over 3.5. i guess thats why cause they are 0-3.5 a lot of coil overs are 1-3.5as far as if they settle you can crank em a little more

What are you referring to when saying 0-3"? The amount of lift, or the amount of thread showing on the coilovers?

The 2.0's are set up for 3-3.5" on a stock weight vehicle. They will still support a bumper, but trying to max them out to their 3" limit is going to be hard on them. They will need to be cranked much further than normal and the ride quality will suffer since you are limiting how much the coil can compress.

That's what I meant when I said they looked cranked- the amount of thread showing. You shouldn't have more than 1-2" of thread showing on coilovers.

May I ask why you didn't get the 2.5 setup since you have a bumper? Any plans for adding additional weight in the future? (Skids, winch, dual battery, etc.)

You may already be past their settling point. Coilovers usually settle .5"-1" over the course of a few weeks after installing them, or one good off-road trip.

Well I was going to go with the 2.5 and then I talked to Mark from OW and he said that if I didn't have a rear bumper w/tire carrier, loaded roof rack and skids, and have just a front bumper that the 2.0 was perfectly fine. Another reason behind it was Mark said that it would especially be fine because I am not taking my truck on high speed runs and that is one of the reasons for the 2.5 over the 2.0. Why is it harder on the coilover? Why would they design something 0-3.5" if it is not meant to go up to that height? I am talking about amount of lift when I say 0-3.5". The front is set at 3.0 or close to that. Did I mess up by not getting the 2.5? I am eventually going to get skids, rear bumper but not for a couple years probably considering that I am not going to be doing serious offroad with 20's nor while the truck is a daily driver. I am still in school so I thought this suspension could last until I am ready for it to be an offroad/weekend vehicle only. I am probably done with armor and weight add ons for a couple years; so am I going to be ok or.... Also, how much settling is the 2.0 going be doing? Thanks for your info ahead of time

I didn't mean to freak you out or put down OW by any means. The 2.0's are meant to provide 3-3.5" of lift on a truck without a bumper. They can still be used on a vehicle with a bumper as Mark told you, it's just harder to do (i.e., you must crank them much more).

The 2.5's have a larger shock body which allows for better cooling when doing faster style offroading. The 2.0's will heat up faster which will cause them to fade and have poor handling. Since you don't do that style of off-roading this is irrelevant to you.

If you get skids or anything else that will add weight to the front, you will need to do something with the coilovers such as upgrade to the 2.5's or get stiffer springs installed onto the 2.0's. The bumper paired with your V8 is putting those 2.0's near their limit. Did Mark know you had a V8?
