Auto Climate Control Repair Services

It has been an goal of mine for the time I bought my 1st 4runner 16 months ago, to find a fix for these Auto climate controls in the Limited models. I recently purchased a 99 Limited with the same problem as my 2000 - unresponsive buttons, erratic temp and fan speed controls, etc. Well, after working on my latest 4runner's controls I have successfully fixed it. I since then have repaired 3 others (2 friends and one I had sitting in a box in pieces because I couldn't fix it with the soldering setup I had. I spent a good bit of money recently on a soldering desoldering station and a DC voltage generator and this allowed me to confidently repair these control units. The problems I've found are cold solder joints, a bad switching transistor, and a couple bad buttons (probably from being mashed because of the unresponsiveness)
Anyways, I would like to fix a couple of units for you guys for free (you would have to pay shipping) as a favor and payback for all the help I've gotten from this forum. I'll do 3 freebees then going forward, I'll fix them cheaper then anyone on Ebay (I think the cheapest now is $68) I'm not looking to make a lot of money, just want to help some people out and get back a little of my investment on my soldering station (it wasn't cheap) I eventually would like to provide a backup unit for people to use, or just sell the backup and provided I get their unit back. I think DAT does it this way. I also would like to upgrade the unit to any LED color the customer would like as a lot of people are using the LEDs now. What do you guys think? I guess the best way would be to jump right in, so the 1st 3 people that PM me, I'll do for free, after that I'll figure a fair price at a cheaper rate than anyone on Ebay. In case your wondering my qualifications I graduated with honors from DeVry University with an AAS in Electronics, and have been doing quite a bit of component level repair for the last 15 years.
I hope to help a lot of guys out with this problem that has plagued these units. Any other questions or comment feel free to post or shoot me a PM.

Ok, I have 3 fellow forum members in. Let me get these fixed up and hopefully I'll earn some good feedback and I'll take care of others with the CCC (Climate Control Curse)

Awesome! I'm glad you were able to figure it out. It would really help the community if you could provide exactly what the fixes are with pictures.

In my opinion, you'll still generate business because some people wouldn't want to tackle the job but you'll be helping the community even more.

Climate control unit is back and reinstalled! I'm happy to say that everything works as it should :)

Also should note that John was exceptionally fast and professional. He even included a video of the working unit (see below)! In and out the same day, all and all with shipping took 4-5 days. Well worth it!

Thanks again John.

How do i get in on this!?!?

I am new to the forum and just bought my first T4R. It's a 2000 Limited and of course the climate control barely responds. One day some buttons work then another day different one's work. And only one side of the display lights up.

What do I need to do in order to get mine repaired?

Thank you in advance!

John is a GOD! He was able to fix my climate control right away and even installed new LED's since my original likes were burnt out. Very professional and easy to work with. I sent him my unit on a Wednesday, he received it Friday and repaired it that day as well. Sent it back on Saturday and I had it back running in my 4runner on Monday. Cannot beat that service whatsoever. Only complaint is he wasn't around 4 years ago to fix it.

Great to hear! Now I just need to know cost and how I contact him to get mine on it's way!

Probably send him the original poster a PM. I had mine repaired a couple months ago by a guy in MN that had ads on Ebay. He was fast and it works great. Not as cheap as the original poster.

Glad to see there is a local guy here fixing these. I sent mine to a guy on Ebay that did a really good job, and warrantied it for life. It's always nice to support "Local" though!

Thanks for the kind words Rob and Will. I appreciate your trust and feedback!
Rob, I honestly don't know how you dealt with this problem for 4 years. What is it 75 degrees year round in NorCal? :biggrin2:

any chance of showing exactly where the most common cold spots are? shipping from my location would be tricky :/
would be nice to have a writeup to share what the common fix is,
this repair remains to be a secret well guarded by anyone who knows how to do it.

Just wanted to +1 on a vouch for John. I sent him my climate control last Thursday (9/10) and received it back fixed with love and awesomeness today (9/16). Thanks again John for the awesome and prompt service!

...I'm not gonna lie though, the cold front that came through saved my butt for the days without a climate control.

After... I had him install new white back lights.

I'll be hitting you up soon as mine is either cold or hot with no in between and the fan controls take a few more turns to work.

He fixed mine too a few months ago...it's been working without flaw! The new LEDs he put in are nice too...now I can see the numbers and all the buttons work!
