auto stuck in drive

2000 limited 4wd ..As the title states.. never had an issue till today ice winter storm driving around trying to grab a bite everything was fine.. lots of slush on the road made a few stops heard light knocking noise but seemed normal as if it was suspension noise..

On way home had to had to turn around due to tree down.. as I was shifting into reverse im locked out.. can't even bypass it to go to park.. gear right now its stuck in drive I can shift between gears just locked out of reverse and park.. is there a sensor I should look for? This is prob is definitely new me.. and im not in 4wd

Weird. Driving in the slush this morning I had the exact same problem when I tried to park at work. I worked the shifter back and forth and got it to loosen up enough to go into park. When I got out and looked underneath there was slush packed up in the trans cover where the linkage arm is and as Gren suggested I believe this was the culprit. After sitting for a few hours (and melting) it shifted just fine when I went to lunch.
 
thanks for the ideas.. I've tried the shift lock out of park per manual figured that it would work in reverse but did not work still locked out.. ill ck on the break lights .. only way i was able to take my key out of the ignition was to unhook the battery.. bad timing, power outage and only car thats able to drive in this condition :mad2:
 
you guys hit it on the mark... i never thought about it since this past snow i never had an issue with built up snow.. my guess is slush freezes quicker and iced up between tranny and underbody must be a linkage up in-between to the tranny.. after 30mins or so with water hose it shifts normal now :cheers: thanks again for your inputs
