Auto to 5 Speed Swap

I'm looking to do a 5 speed swap on my 1998 4Runner Limited 4x4 with the auto/locker and push button style shifter.

I have a wrecker that is selling me the trans, t-case, drive shafts, cross member, master/slave cylinder, peddle set and interior panel for only $600! I'll be buying a new clutch kit with flywheel, etc.

Anyone who has done this, can you confirm that these are all the parts I need? I've been trying to search on this topic but the threads are not exactly definitive. I don't believe the ECU is necessary in my case but correct me if I'm wrong.

I'd just sell yours and buy a manual though, to be honest. I'm pricing out the same swap for my JDM Land Cruiser and it's roughly $2,600 USD. It's the little fiddly things that cost you a bunch.
 
What is the improvement going from auto to standard that makes this worth it? I grew up driving standards and really see nothing bad about a DD auto. Just wondering.
 
I just did a 5 speed swap also :). Took 5 hours. I highly recommend buying new master clutch and slave cylinder. Also get new master clutch line. I haven't swapped the ECU yet so I have a code. But once I install the clutch pedal switch and cancel start switch. I'll repin my harensss to the manual ecu. If its the same year truck as your 98, get the manual ecu. But you will need to either swap harness or repin your auto harness. Also get the clutch cancel start switch. Get all the bolts ! I also recommend getting the manual shifter gaskets and the transfer case shifter gaskets. You'll be right there and it's good time to put new ones. Mine starting leaking after the swap. Had to put new gaskets .. You can also get few gaskets for the tranny ! To freshen it up.

Remember to resurface a used flywheel. I went with duralast clutch for $150. Which actually was a excedy clutch.

You don't mention what year the donor parts are and obviously they have to be the same engine. If it is the same year get the ecu and engine wiring harness. As mentioned get the clutch start and clutch cancel switch, these parts have to be the same year as your 98. I would get the flywheel too and resurface it. The cross members are the same but the transmission mounts are different for the auto and 5 speed. The long bolts that mate the engine to the transmission are slightly different so grab those if you can and also the bracket that holds the exhaust to the engine is different. It took me 5 days to do mine but I am slow and did it by myself. The 5 speed swap was the best mod I have done to my 4runner. I drive on steep, windy roads with not much traffic and it is way better without the slushbox!

Easier said then done. I've been trying to find a good condition 5 speed that isn't ridiculously over priced for about 4 months now. I'm really considering just swapping a 5 speed into my 99 limited.
 
Really, ita not that difficult to do a swap. If you have everything of the same year truck. It's all straight forward, with proper tools, research and patient. I don't regret my swap, nor was it hard. The only hars thing will be re pinning the harness. But I already made a repin chart.

I recommend installing the Clutch master first and the clutch pedal first. All the mounting points for the pedal are there. Just covered. The groove where the master goes is there also. Just need to drill it. And for the brake pedal, just swap the pedal it self. Do not swap the whole bracket. They are addentical and its much easier to just swap the pedal. Once you have your master installed, and clutch pedal, you'll be set and ready.

Hehehe. Thanks for the compliment. That was definitely a first for me. Had never touched a transmission prior to that, but necessity will make you do all kinds of wild things.

OP - I believe there is a lit in my TTORA thread of the parts you will need. I don't want to try to tell you from memory but my thread should detail everything. As mentioned by another member above, make sure to get the ECU as you will likely not come across a 1998 one anytime again soon, and you need one from the same year. I ran mine with the auto ecu for several years with no ill effects. The CEL is not an issue where I am as inspections are a joke. I just recently swapped in a manual ECU and repinned the wiring harness. Pretty easy to do is you have a pin map. A fella on TTORA made a repin chart for the 1998 4runner that is correct except for in one spot IIRC. Let me know if you can't find his chart. I know I saved it somewhere. The only other part that is dicey is properly placing the master cylinder. You have to drill a couple of holes in the firewall that need to be precisely placed. Be careful with this part.

The wiring for the clutch cancel and neutral safety switch are covered in my thread. Also - make sure to grab the clutch cancel switch. I failed to, and it took me forever to find one. I also have not wired it in yet, so when you get to that point - clue me in!!

Let me know if you have any questions - but I highly suggest you take a look at my thread and the others available on here and TTORA. There were a handful of guys doing the sawp at the same time I did mine. I believe each had their own thread as well.

1999 4runner 5 speed to 99 auto. swap

the auto is a limited with muti mode and would like to keep i have both vehicles i just totaled out the 5 speed and bought the auto. i prefer the 5 speed. also not sure witch transfer case is actually better
