Automatic AC mode switch

Are any limited owners auto A/C switch always staying lit? Normally mine goes off if I press other buttons. The auto mode is canceled when I still press the other buttons to take it out of auto mode; the light just stays on. This just recently started. Have I just missed something really obvious?

Mine Auto light only goes on when I hit the auto button, when I press it again it goes off.


UPDATE.....My auto light only goes off if I lower the fan speed.

Mine used to do that but now it just stays on all the time.

UPDATE...Ok. Maybe I'm just going crazy or something. The light does go off when I adjust the fan speed. I could have sworn that it would go off if I pressed other buttons.

seems like you're fine now but ive noticed this in my newer cars (2008 camry and now the '12 4runner) that if you set the cool---heat knob to coldest the AC will stay on all the time, so i leave the knob 1 click away from the coldest temp so i can just tap the AC button whenever i actually want the AC to be on (instead of all the time)

Then there is the simple question of "what would engineer1 do?"

Based on the other vehicle that has automatic (as in, set temp and it'll figure it out) climate control, it's either fully in control, or if you press a button, it's in 'manual' mode, where the temp you set still dictates the outlet temperature, but you either changed the outlet configuration or the fan speed. By the looks of it, the t4r just turns off the "auto" indicator when it's in that mode.

A better name for this mode is "best effort" since obviously if you set the fan to lowest speed and top vent output at an external temp of -20, there is no way it'll get to the temp you actually set.

Did that explain it or do I need to put up a logic flowchart?

Homey clause nailed it with the "best effort" coin IMO. My SR5 obviously doesn't have this witch craft but my last 3 vehicle did and all of them auto mode would adjust the fan speed accordingly to what the desired inside air temp was based on the thermo stat.

I found it mostly pointless so I usually leave the thermostat and fan on their lowest settings and it cools the car down just fine.

So I hit the auto button while out driving today and the same thing as my other cars. It controlled the fan speed relative to what temperature I set the thermostat
