Automatic headlights at night : possible mod?

The hope is based on the TRD Pro having auto on headlights and being so closely related to the Trail/TRD Offroad which doesn't. Also, 4th gens (obviously different wiring from the 5th gen, but from looks of things not all that dissimilar) were able to enable it with a sensor, stalk and harness (i.e., Toyota didn't just install it on 4th gen SR5 and Trail trims).

You probably won't be able to see the number on the Main bodyECU compu network being inside of the D/S fusebox so you can just call the pts dept at the dealership and they'll give it to you over the phone!

So, here's my latest theory based in part on the wiring diagram:
The tail light wire (RED) needs to be connected/switched on in order for the ECU to know to read the light sensor and toggle between DRLs and headlights. It makes some sense in that if the tail light wire is not engaged, the truck would have just headlights and no tail lights - not a proper nighttime setting. I developed this theory because the wire numbers in the diagram are difficult to read at the originally posted resolution and I thought there was some small chance the T/RED (T for TAIL) wire might be numbered something other than 18 (where it is in my harness plug). Comparing the T/RED number label to other pixel blended jpg numbers elsewhere in the diagram, I thought there was a small chance it might actually read 14, which is not only an open slot on the harness plug but would put the red wire next to the pink wire which appears to be related to the light sensor (confirmation bias?).

I don't know if this theory is wishful thinking or if I'm on to a solution. I doubt the theory because the diagram indicates it's for both "W/ AUTOMATIC LIGHT CONTROL" and "W/O AUTOMATIC LIGHT CONTROL" (which means it's not necessarily exclusively the Limited circuit diagram as indicated in the original post) and it doesn't: 1. differentiate between red wiring locations; 2. show a connection between the T/RED wire and the AUTO(3)/DRL(4) setting on the SWITCH ASSEMBLY. In any case, I see 3 paths forward: 1. As before, someone with a Limited or TRD Pro posts a picture (or description) of the wires running into their light stalk harness plug for comparison; 2. [MENTION=83083]rigtec[/MENTION] confirms the T/RED number on the original copy of the diagram; or 3. Someone (honestly and knowledgeably) indicates to me I won't destroy anything by pulling the T/RED wire from slot 18 and putting it in slot 14 (I suppose there's a circuit tester version of this experiment too). Thoughts?

I actually thought it was weird in this day and age it didn't as a CDS cell at retail at Radio Shack is $2. Can't imagine Toyotas cost being more than 50 cents for it. Your research looks promising so far. I also stumbled upon this Tacoma thread, while not entirely related, there is some interesting info in his PDF if you read it all and then look at the last part about the SR5 and the hidden harnesses behind glove box for light sensor.

DIY: Add auto headlight to your grade Tundra or SR5!

I used to install car stereos and alarms for a living, so I intend to take a look into it. What is holding me back at the moment is the cost of the stalk if this doesn't work, when I can get the DEI auto headlight module for $30 and probably be done in 1 or 2 hours. I'll update this thread though if I find anything further.

I think you are right about the wiring harness. The 4th gen I have found the harness as cheap as $10 or 15 and the 5th gen is over $200 and looks like it replaces most of the car's wiring! What I may end up doing is getting the factory light sensor, and using that to tie into the DEI 545t, since that cds cell they use is ugly.

I used to install car alarms, and we did various DEI product installs. MOST vehicles didn't have problems with. The "problems" you experience with some of the modules is they only have a - output, and the vehicle may require 12V +. So you sometimes have to get creative with relays and know how to wire them. Or for example if the parking lights required a - and the headlights required + then you have to get really creative. I doubt this is the case with our 4Rs. I found this and some others, so ours should be similar. I figure $30 and 1-2 hours may be easier than trying the other way.

One thing I should note on the first tundrageek link is the light stalk install process is identical to what I did and therefore different from the 4th gen 4R light stalk installs I've seen posted. I'm not sure if that means anything regarding the wiring, though, and I used a different part number. I'm (hopefully soon) going to open my dash and look at the wiring harnesses there and compare to the tundra link pinout info.
 
Did you try adjusting the setting in the Toyota techstream?

I have a 2014 4runner sr5 premium with no auto headlights and I really got excited seeing you install the stalk and the sensor. Only thing I can think of missing is setting the auto headlight on/off setting and sensitivity through the toyota techstream software.

For my model of 4runner I do not have wiring harness but I am thinking I will make my own wiring harness after getting a used sensor with harness and making needed mods and then route it through to ECU and connecting it to J3 connector on PINS 18,19,20 or 19,20,21 have to play around that thing.

Let me know if you can program and see if your setup worked !

for those who had the dummy plug and replaced it with a light sensor, was there other things needed to make the dash lights dim automatically? i got a sensor off ebay, and it fits the harness, but no dimming of dash/entertainment. i also made sure the brightness wasn't locked up to max.

Cannot get automatic headlight until Mainbody ECU is flashed

All the folks who want to install automatic headlight on SR5, Trail will have to have the same software as the limited and TRD pro to get it working on their cars.

I successfully installed headlight Stalk from Limited and also did all the wiring correct but no automatic headlight. Turns out that you have to flash the mainbody ECU which controls the headlights and cabin lights and many other functions to that of the limited/ TRD pro 4runner. This can only be done by Toyota not even dealers can do this and they actually do not have any knowledge or expertise to do such an update.

Unfortunately even changing the Mainbody ECU wont solve the problem as it wont accept the module as it checks other computers for VIN match.

thanks for the update, that is a lot of work to go through for nothin, Once you get used to those auto headlights its just impossible to go back

Are you saying it is possible for a trail? How much does it coast to reflash the ecu?

No you cannot get the auto headlights on Trail, SR5, SR5 premium.

It only comes with Limited and TRD Pro. Only Toyota can reflash the Mainbody ECU and also they wont do it coz they want people to pay more for small features like automatic headlight, push key start and so on..

So basically you cannot pay to get it reflashed and also even if you are able to get a Mainbody ECU from other limited or TRD Pro it wont work with SR5, Trail, SR5 premium as its programmed with the other ECU's in the 4runner and wont accept it.

I think the only other option is aftermarket relay to turn off/on automatic lights no company has come up with it and not sure if anyone has done a custom relay for automatic headlights.

With the DEI kit, when you turn off the ignition key do the headlights remain on until 20 seconds or so after the last door is shut, or until double lock click on the fob (like factory)? Or are the lights simply turning off as soon as you turn off the ignition key?
