Automatic headlights at night : possible mod?

I guess it's a region thing then because in the northwest its common for people to always have their headlights on so people see you ya sperg lol

Still what does it matter, leave them on

I use this fancy new technology called muh DRLs Its like a headlight but made for the daytime use
 
Whats wrong with just leaving the headlights on all the time? My company van automatically has the lights on when you shift into drive. Its a safety thing. Why would anybody be worried about turning them off?
 
Was wondering if anything came out of this as well. Registered on the site as I was hoping to get one for my new 2020. I didn't realize that a TRD Off-Road Premium wouldn't have auto-headlights. Sigh...

That sensor is part of the equation, it will auto adjust dash lighting (providing your dash light switch isnt clicked to MAX). Unfortunately, what it does not do is turn low beams on or off based on the level of light that it reads. [MENTION=294037]ColtB45[/MENTION] looks to have developed a control module to handle that last part.
 
It's cool that some creative minds put together a way to possibly do this, but I just have to ask: why? What for? Auto headlights aren't something I could ever see myself wanting in a vehicle.
 
Just last week I saw two vehicles driving through the city completely blacked out. No idea they didn’t have their lights on. I think there’s certainly a place for it.
 
I would love to know if the module colt made works. I bought the light sensor, and the dash switch for my wife car....No go. Dont work with the automatic function.
 
FYI, for those with a 2020, like me, the sensor has changed. Damn expensive too. Going to wait to see if anything pans out with this mod before I drop the coin on that sensor.

So I'm coming from the complete opposite side of the vehicle spectrum. I drove an '09 MINI JCW. It had wonderful HID headlights the would auto level for the best forward vision I've had in a car. It also had auto lights. About dusk the lights would come on and the gauges and all would auto dim. About the only time I had to turn the lights on was when it was raining.

I know it sounds trivial but both this car and my wife's Honda do this. You get in and drive and don't really think about it. At nights the lights stay on for a courtesy interval.

Now I must say I was extremely displeased with the headlight situation in my overall. Damn man, it's like 2020 but the 4Runner has the same light output as my old '91 CRX! Don't get me wrong I love the vehicle and having the the option to make it mine as well as I appreciate the thought for keeping things simple so that breaks on the trail are limited, but there are a couple of head scratcher decisions...
 
I simply need to state you here that restricted had auto on, maybe you could source the parts legitimately from Toyota. Not certain how much work it would be.

Same here! I have a 2020 ORP, and I can't believe Toyota did not include the sensor. When people figured out how to upgrade, they changed the plug, and want to charge 200X the cost. Sensor is sensor, it should not cost that much.
 
I am also a fan of auto headlights. It should be simple. On my MkV GTI it was as simple as changing out the headlight switch and the dash sensor. The new headlight switch had the Auto setting and the dash sensor somehow activated the headlights.

I have running auto headlights using the Directed Electronics 545T Nite-Lite System D.

Works nice only thing is it is little sensitive and turns the lights on if you go under a bridge but still do not have to turn my lights on and off during or touch the switch.

Not sure what they changed for new 4runner but I think it will work up until 2017 or so 4runner 5th gen. Mine is a 2014 4runner
