Automatic Transmission or Brake Weirdness

Howdy,

Not sure if this is a problem or not...it's been so long since I had driven a automatic tranny for a long period of time.

The thing is if I come to a complete stop on flat ground then let my foot off the brake the T4R does not move forward, not an inch. When accelerating afterwards it is quick and responsive and quick zippy. No noises or lurching, nice smooth responsive take off. I considered a sticking rear brake and the rear drums are warm+ after a long drive, not hot. Is this behavior normal, a friend suggested yes?

Also while on the topic of transmissions.... I have been doing a slow flush; drain and fill once a week. It was darker the first few but now looking good after 3-4 changes..lost count! But here's what is weird...I think like 2 quarts is all that drains out and I was putting ~2 quarts back in, slowly adding and checking dipstick. After running a few miles right up near hot line of the dipstick. Well last time drained ~2 quarts but had to add ~4 quarts to fill it up! No leaks anywhere! I have been concerned I am reading the dip stick wrong; I have the motor running in Park. Neutral about the same. This as I said is after warmed up and having gone through all the gears... Only possibility and this is remote...I installed a B&M remote cooler the ...68 model...perhaps it did not fill up the first time...but now is allowing X amount more of ATF to circulate. Any idea how much ATF the cooler adds if any?

Thanks,

Warren

Coolers don't add much capacity, maybe half quart. Not sure about why you went from needing 2 to 4 on the drain and fills. Usually people drain 4+ quarts. All I can suggest is somehow you read wrong or were getting bad dipstick readings.

Drive it around to get it good and hot so it does that not moving thing and then get the back wheels off the ground and see if they are dragging badly or if they turn freely. Check your trans fluid then too and make sure it's at the top hot mark.

My brother complained about that on his truck. Turns out he had a bad caliper

I get 4qts draining the trans.

Thanks...

I'll check the caliper.

I only get 2 qts, before the 4 qt add. This has been discussed here but the manual says for a 4WD 2 qts is what the change will be....

Weirdness.

i get this too on my truck i stop on a light and the truck wont move.. i changed the axle seals, rear brake shoes and adjusted em' and still does the same thing.. i changed my front calipers to the tundra ones so i know i have good calipers.. i hope theres a answer or solution for this... im running 17" sequioa wheels with 165/70/17 tires..

Doesn't the parking brake reset the rear drums each time? How often do you engage the parking brake? I don't have this issue and use the parking brake every time I put the truck in park, maybe there is correlation?

What I and my brother did was he drove his truck to my garage and its driveway is on a slight slope. It would not coast down the slope.

So we pulled it in the garage and I tried pushing it in neutral. I busted a nut getting it to move. Now granted its a 6200lbs dodge ram with the cummins but geeze.

Jacked up the drivers front and spun the wheel by hand and it seemed tight but moved. He put on the brake and left off the brake and then I couldn't move the wheel without getting a red face. That's when he mentioned he had replaced the passenger side caliper two years ago. I busted on him for not replacing both as a set and his reply was....why? Nothing was wrong with it then.

Well...

I was about to lift the T4R and spin the wheel but figured I'd just put 'er in neutral and give it a slight push...It easily rolled with an arm push. I do have 265 tire's on it...

As per ATF...it's right at the full mark..perhaps I was reading wrong before but it was easier when the fluid was dark. I've been more painstaking as the ATF is now quite pink and clear and hard to tell exact level especially after adding ATF. At least I figured out a system to get that dip stick in and out with minor frustration.

BTW I read a thread where someone cut off the dip stick just below the cold mark...That would help but something tells me not to. IS this a common practice?

Thanks,

Warren
