Has anyone done this mod? I was looking on here and haven't seen anything when searching about installing an auxiliary fuel tank in the stock spare location. I have an opportunity to get a nice summit tank for dirt and was thinking about possibly incorporating it into my factory system. I know some people on Expeditions West have done it in their Tacos, but I was just curious if anyone has done it on here with the 4Runner specifically?

I remember reading somewhere, yotatech possibly, that someone put a F-150 (or some other ford truck) gas tank in that location. Try googling it, I'm sure you'll find it. I think it's a pretty easy and good fit/location, but there is some complexity in the fuel pump part of the equation.

I've researched this quite a bit. There is only 1 4Runner owner that has done this that I can think of. I don't think it's a 3rd Gen either. I know he's not on this forum. I can't remember where I saw it. I've been wanting to put an aux tank in the same spot for a while now. If you do this you should make a good write-up.

That's what I remember reading somewhere, using an F-150 tank for extended range.
 
Ive seen it done yes, I believe addictedoffroad here in CO has a full SAS where they removed the stock tank and added an aftermarket race tank in the stock spare spot so the driveshaft wouldnt hit the stock gas tank and cause it too limit flex.

They also did the f150 swapped tank that also stopped from limiting flex. Seen where a member added fuel cans to the stock tire spot. Have not seen it done for an aux though.
 
What about the guy who has the dark tan/ brown lifted 3rd gen and has built that magnificent camping trailer? he used a F150 bed frame for the trailer and kept the stock fuel tank then is able to pump fuel into his 4runner if need be from the stock ford tank on the trailer. maybe you can get some tips from him.

X1 on being interested in the details. This is something I would love to do, but have not done any figuring out on. I would suggest seeing what you can find out from the Expo West guys or anything else for a 1st Gen Tacoma as I am assuming the fuel delivery parts used are probably the same, just mounting the tank in a different place is all.

I did a quick look through his build. He actually used the back half of the frame from his original Toyota pickup. He also hasn't moved the original tank on the 4Runner, just running a Lil Skips skid plate.
 
If I'm not mistaken, I believe "THE KID"(.Isaac)has either done this or is in the process of doing the f-150 tank. You might want to pm him I'm sure he has good info on it.
 
There's a reason people haven't does this mod.

1) the tank is the same capacity.
2) you loose capacity because you have to beat it to fit.
3) you have to fab up everything, and you loose your skid plate.
4) the ford pump runs differently than the stock pump, therefore the gauge reads wrong
5) in order to make it read right, you have to cut and weld the Toyota pump mounting points into the new tank, as well as extend the wiring. This meaning no truck for emergency stuff that might come up.

6) you loose the skid plate, increasing the risk of puncturing the tank.

I'm STILL working on my tank. Going to do some more work on it this weekend hopefully.

It's a tank I built, 35 gal, and I cut the mounts off an old tank that I had. Hoping to get it done by the end of summer. If this baby doesn't kick my ass first....

First of all, thanks! Second, I used a Toyota frame and tank. Build thread can be found in my signature. Not much help to this thread exempt for the plumbing of the aux fuel pump. I will say having extra fuel is nice, I hate the fuel range of these things!

eh, i was close enough. Toyota, Ford, i like em both.
 
Man, I would certainly love to get a 30 gal under this thing, but I figure if I'm moving my spare,
then the tire is going on the roof or a swing-out, either of which can also support
some extra MFCs or a Rotopax. I don't always need all the fuel. (yet)

Sucks cause I used to work at CES - the shop that made the Tacoma tank...
maybe Shane can work out some T4R goodness for us. ;)
 
so here is what i know about this, you need a f-150/f-250 rear tank from one of the mid to late 80s trucks that had dual tanks... you need the tank and the straps(to make this "easy") and then just find a way to link the tanks with a pump to transfer fuel from one tank to the next... the rear tank off of those trucks will fit in between our frame rails just like it does in the fords. i had a tank, but found out it had rust and so now im looking for another tank.... not too seriously at the moment cause right now i have some other issues to deal with like fixing the front end looseness i have, and fixing my AC.
 
Look on pirate. Almost all the SAS'd ad linked 4Rs have this mod done and yes your all correct. It is the reserve tank from a mid 90s ford F-150. You can either use the pump that for has (which suck!) or retrofit a Toyota one in (prepare for some plastic work).

Correct Scotty from AO did this on his black 4Runner he built a few years ago.

Another option is that there is a fuel cell that is 31L x 21W x 7H that will fit in there. (This is the option I am going with) you will need to get an external FP to make it fit nice and tight up in there.

Unless you are going to long travel your rear (another future upgrade) then this mod would have no purpose but loading more weight to the rear.
 
Thanks for the input guys, I am particular to this certain tank since I'm getting it for a case of beer. It's an aftermarket race cell and I was going to fab it up to fit as long as its dimensions don't interfere with ground clearance or anything like that. If I move on this I'll make sure to do a good picture/write up on it. I'm thinking I'll probably just pipe the aux tank into the main tank and run an on/off switch on a simple fuel pump. That way I can route from the aux tank into the stock tank. It seems like the simplest way to make it work efficiently. I can then just monitor my fuel by the stock gauges and fill it as needed.

He's talking about an aux. tank, not relocating the main tank completely. All you'd need is a scavenge pump to pump fuel from the aux tank to the main tank, and then you don't need to worry about the fuel gauge and such. Seems pretty cool for long hauls, 34 total gallons would come in handy.
