Aux In with OEM Radio

Mine's the single din cassette only unit . I like that adapter though! Maybe I can upgrade to the double din cassette/cd to keep it original.




I'd like to keep it original to the 4Runner radios of that era if possible, however that is a really good option too. Especially with the adapter cable being available!

The original radios sucked the big one. Just saying…

Some folks like the OEM radios.
[ their rigs their choice I say]

I am debating running newer head units as I am getting too much interference using my Bluetooth adapter to radio channel.

Eventually, I go to android based head units but not required at this time..

My ears can't hear for sht, so I'd rather go with sounds 80% of perfect over looks like ass (any and everything aftermarket ~ there isn't a single exception I've ever seen). I deeply regret swapping the OEM radio for the aftermarket one I have now... it's unreliable at only 3 years since purchase, bluetooth wasn't worth the cost of having to Look at the dang thing. Especially knowing now how cheap and easy it is to add that one feature.

May be to clarify. I put an OEM scion radio in. It’s a T1819. It looks factory like a factory radio should. Not bling bling looking.

Look at that nice Call and End button to make phone calls through the radio.

The scion radio is both android and iPhone capable. Bluetooth calling is awesome. I spend 50min in my rig each way to work and back. I wanted connectivity and tunes for my drive to and from work. I paid 50 dollars and it included the Toyota adapter cables to convert the new radio wiring to the old stuff. I just needed to buy the Mic to do the hands free talking.

Sounds like a decent setup. I would like to run an application like torque pro on my head unit all the time. So the gauges are real time.

Also along with 2 or 4 cameras feeds. This is what I am leaning towards down the road.

They make head units that actually run Android on the radios themselves.
Sorta like a double din tablet that has radio Bluetooth. Video inputs and USB inputs to read the information off the obd2 connector...

I am sooooo sorry for reviving an old thread. But I'm picking up a 98 base tomorrow with this same single din tape deck radio and have been dying trying to find a bluetooth or aux in solution while keeping the original deck.

Almost gave up and was gonna go for a retro looking modern radio and found this thread. Do you remember how you hooked up this aux in line? Had no idea that original radio could support it!

I had prepared a couple photos showing the connections but never posted them. So in the next post they will be.

Well, thanks for digging this up again. Here is a little more info on how to do it. I know that LOTS would rather just put in a new stereo and that's fine. I just like the OEM stereo and wanted to keep it. This was a winter project to figure this one out so I don't mind the time it took me. I'm happy with the results.

This is for the basic radio in my 96 Base model. I would assume the tape deck and connections would be similar in other models.

There are 2 connectors on the tape deck assembly. The one labelled A needs to be disconnected and left that way, it powers the tape motor which is no longer needed.

The connector labelled B needs to be disconnected also and here you will find the left, right and signal ground that you will need to tap into. The Tape deck assembly has an audio pre-amp built in. By splicing into the wires at the connector you are tapping into the circuit after the pre-amp which is good. I found the audio levels to be just about right here. When switching from aux audio to radio the sound levels are about the same.

I used a normal stereo aux cord and chopped it to suit then neatly tucked it into the stereo and fastened securely. I used a bulkhead type connector in the dash for plugging the Ipod or phone into.

I can't guarantee this will work for you but I have had no issues with it to date.

I like the OEM look, but wanted bluetooth. This was my compromise.
