axle nut size for 2003 4runner

Damn, I just replaced my CV Boots last week... you'd think I'd remember the size. I believe it is a 34mm nut. But double check with a ruler to be sure.

I just searched the web for same info last week.... some info says 35 mm some info says 36mm
I couldn't get a definite answer so I bought a 35mm at Pep Boys for a few dollars since I already have a 36mm.
It is one or the other... I know that axle nut torque is like a 170' lbs so I hope you have a good breaker bar or impact gun!!

The spec I saw said 217lbs of torque

ya my boot is leaking grease on the inside part where the small clamp holds it in place. .

It just seemed to be a common failure point when I inspected it on my 4Runner.
Interesting thing to note, there is two different types of grease used in our CV Joints, outer is dark colored, inner is light colored. Has to do with temperature/wear and tear.

I just did both sides over the weekend and my oems were 35mm. The new axles I got did in fact have larger nuts, but instead of getting two big different sized sockets, I reused the original nuts.
Be careful removing the grease seals. They get damaged very easily. I damaged one of mine beyond reuse, and it is going to cost me $23 to replace ONE!
Also, I didnt have a torque wrench that goes to 217 ft lbs, so I borrowed one from autozone. Gotta love the loaner tool program!
Edit: Also, if you DID need a 34mm, or 36mm socket, Autozone has those as loaners, but not the odd size sockets, of course!

Good point, not sure if I posted this on here or not but the spare axle I bought at Checker / O Reily has a 38mm so if I need to change one on the trail I will do as you did and re use the stocks nuts.
You can also use a 1 3/8". Either that or 35mm will work. That's what I wound-up with after replacing a front axle last week.
I'll second A/V1 on the "be careful with the grease seals" sentiment. The one on the inside of the spindle I damaged set me back $37 because the stealership had them, but the parts store I bought the shaft from didn't.
I think I also did things the hard way. Seems the lower ball joint assembly comes off easily with 2 19mm bolts, I didn't notice those until looking harder when I just couldn't get the driveshaft out having only removed the upper balljoint.
