Axle replacement

Hey guys looking at replacing my 2 front cv axles. I have a torn boot on the right and a leaking/bad seal on the left. Picked up the car about a month ago and the axles look very old so I figure I might as well swap them out. I've read some threads recommending CVJ and I was looking into them but noticed Pep Boys selling OEM remanufactured axles. Am I correct in thinking this is a genuine Toyota axle or can they say that and have it just be an aftermarket that fits? It's cheaper than CVJ as I can go pick them up and avoid shipping cost.

I can almost guarantee that hose are not OEM axles, well at least not completely. If anything, the axle shaft in the middle of the assembly may be original, but the inner and out joints are aftermarket. Problem with these is that they work OK with stock setups, but if you have any kind of lift they tend to be trouble as they can't articulate as well as the OEM setups.

Go with the CVJ remans.
 
First off what are you planning with the vehicle? Just a daily driver or off-road warrior?

Also how bad is the leak? Is there just grey-ish grease leaking from the torn boots or is it all filled with debris? These axles can be rebooted pretty easily and honestly I would reboot the axles before I replaced them with anything less than Genuine Toyota axles at the very least (though to be honest I will probably end up getting the beefy CVJ off-road units.)
 
Ok that's what I figured. Just wanted to see what others thought. Just got it back from dealer yesterday after a timing belt/water pump job and they mentioned it was leaking along with a bad left axle seal. Gonna tackle the seal tomorrow and do a closer examination of the right boot and and also clean up the axles to get an idea of how old they are. See whether to order new clamps, reboot or new axle/s. With the higher mileage we plan on making it an around town vehicle for my stay at home wife and also take it out once a month to the desert. We drive down moderate dirt trails to camp miles from anyone. Not too many rocks.
 
Just got done doing this on my 4runner last week. Bought all the stuff on ebay to reboot, costing about $50. Went to Sanel auto parts to pick up some other stuff and he heard what i was doing. Looked up re manufactured cv axles and decided to go his route instead. $50 for one axle and it comes with a 1 year warranty. very simple to install with basic skills. Replace differential seal while your at it. Rented the bearing seal driver kit from autozone and it was perfect size to push in the seal without damaging.

If you ever need to, you can use any PVC plumbing joint that is intended to fit around (not inside) a 2" PVC pipe to install the seal.
 
Myself and several others have bought one from RockAuto for less than $50. Haven't had a single issue so far. [MENTION=68704]superman3043[/MENTION] has been running his for some time and as far as I know hasn't had any issues with it. Oem is not necessarily always the best. Never figured out why people automagically think if they pay more for it with the manufacturers name on it it must be superior... I've NEVER bought OEM on any vehicle in the 20yrs I've legally been driving and have never had any issue's.

I guess it's the old disclaimer "Results may vary". My experience has not been good with non OEM axles on my lifted truck. On a stock or modest lift such as using spacers, aftermarket axles would be OK, but this has been my experience.
 
One of my boots was recently leaking. Boot was not torn just leaking from the clamp. Since I have a CPO 100k toyota warranty I took it into the dealer last month. Toyota just replaced both boots with new ones. Total cost billed to Toyota NA was $260. I was little hesitant to bring it in since I am lifted with 285's on. Toyota Dealer was awesome and did not care I was modded at all. This particular dealer sells and installs King lifts for Tacoma's so maybe that is why. :)

I'm with [MENTION=66389]BlackWorksInc[/MENTION] I would just put on new boots on your OEM axle than to get a cheap chinese quality axle thrown in.

Well I fixed the seal this weekend on the left side. That seal just didn't want to go in right lol. Cleaned up the boot on the right and it has a very slow leak but I couldn't find any damage to the boot. Just gonna reclamp this weekend with the marine clamps that are referenced in another thread on here. If the time comes we will go with the CVJ as they seem to have a great reputation on here. BTW I called my local dealer to see if they had any used axles for sale. They said no but the could get me a new OEM for $538. I laughed and hung up. Do people actually pay that? So many other options in that price range.
