Ok, I've brought this up before, but wanted to get some input.

I have LT in the rear... its awesome, but when I really flex it out and get on or close to being on two wheels with the driver rear tucked.. my drive shaft is rubbing the gas tank skid. I had another thread about this and my efforts to resolve it before.. but figured I would start over since it has started happening again. The axle is shifting over about 2".

It rubs in two places. One is at the forward portion of the U-Joint half yoke and the other is further forward on a weight or some other metal bump on on the smooth portion of the drive shaft (this is the area where it is very close the gas tank itself)

I have trimmed the skid as much as possible plus relocated the rear bracket, and don't think there is really much more I can do for clearance besides coming up with a way to keep the axle more centered.

This only happens with the rear sway off...

For entertainment purposes here is a video with some of the rubbing tanking place. You can hear it if you listen carefully. It only happens when the drive shaft is in certain positions (when the yoke half comes around...). It is not severe.. but I would really like to eliminate it. Grinding noises drive me nuts.

So, my question is what would potentially resolve this. The track bar seems like the obvious place to start, but it seems odd that I would need to shorten it. That seems like the only way to keep it centered with the driver wheel tucked. Normally, you lengthen it a bit after a lift to match normal ride height... In this case, the arc should already be starting to pull it towards the passenger side as shown in the attached picture. Thoughts?

yeah, typically you lengthen your panhard to re-centre after a lift. I have the MT LT set up too, plus the MT adjustable 4 link with an adjustable panhard. can't say I've noticed any rubbing as you describe. I'll crawl under tomorrow to see if there has been any contact

Just to clarify a bit more... I have the RCI aluminum gas tank skid.

It initially rubbed like crazy when I put on the LT. But I was able to resolve itl by trimming the skid and adjusting the mounting bracket. Detailed in this thread.

But now after going to 34" tires and greater offset wheels it started again. I think it is related to flexing it out more with more leverage from the wider track...
 
The only way to totally solve the issue of axle drift under droop, is to eliminate the track bar entirely by triangulating the upper control arms, which wouldn't be that difficult
 
Has this issue ever been brought up to Metal Tech? I am sure [MENTION=80984]LT[/MENTION] will respond if asked. This tank rub is the only thing holding me back from getting the kit. Might just do the ICON overland springs with new shocks.

I would not let it hold you back, It is really not a big deal at all. I'm just picky about noise....

It is the best bang for the buck I have done to the truck hands down. It is extremely functional.

I'm wondering if lowering the track bar mount on the frame would fix it. That should
a). Make it more centered at ride height
b). Pull it more towards the passenger side at full compression...

However, I'm not sure it will work.

My only other option is to come up with a more creative mounting system for the gas tank skid.

I'm within probably 10mm of it not rubbing at all.

Put fuel tank where spare tire is. Do a true 4 link with longer triangulated upper and lower links

I have Bud Built skids and the Metal Tech LT and have not had one issue with anything hitting other than the panhard o. the KDSS piston

Would be nice, but I'm not looking to go that complex, I need about 10mm of clearance... just a minor adjustment somewhere.
 
Nope, everything is still in place. Meeting with 4x4Labs to see about fabbing a panhard with a bend to miss KDSS soon.
 
Quite possible, but at less than 6k miles, not quite ready to ditch the KDSS. It works for what I have run, not looking to be a ramp queen, so at this point, I am happy with what I have. 8 can understand your frustration, tho. Like has been said, adjustable panhard or lower the top connection point to achieve stock geometry

Is that not the reason why Jeeps catch on fire when rear ended as determined from a NHTSA investigation? Back in April a Georgia jury ordered the Fiat/Chrysler to pay $150 million to the family of a 4-year old boy who burned to death in after a crash in 2012.

A 4 year old burned to death! That is so sad.

Considering that Jeeps havent had their fuel tank in that location since 2006 I'd say that probably wasn't the fade of the fire. Good try though.

This would equate to a custom fuel tank in the 4runner's spare tire location, with no crash testing data of having a fuel tank there at any speeds. For which the area was not designed to have a fuel tank in the 1st place (i.e. could be a crumple zone). In addition to not having any repeated engineering testing to validate that a custom one off fuel tank would prevent rupture upon applied force.

All these items to me raise a redflag of not a good idea.

If I understood the Jeep issue, the fix was to install a gas tank skid plate, so I don't think it was the location as much as it was the exposure.
