Axle swap, Lockers, Gear Info for my new build

Rear blown Diff Help

As I came off a rock spinning when I landed not wanting to fall in the next ditch, I slammed on the breaks then heard nothin but crack crack crack as i tried to move forward could it be the splines or diff it drove and skipped as it crawled forward. Any have any input as what to do next

Well I yet have to open up my diff cover but this weekend I blew my diff so I am looking which way to go and reading up any input would be greatly appreciated, I have a V8

Ew. Pathfinders...:biggrin1:

Lots here have used East Coast Gear Supply. They will rebuild a diff you send in or ship one to you and you send in yours after you swap to avoid a core charge.

Or a junkyard might have one for a couple hundred $, 3rd gen 4runners, Tacomas, Fj's have compatible 3rd members that you can swap with as long as they have the 3.73 gear ratio yours has.

it is hard to find guys up here who can swing the cash on the 4runner so really no groups here ride quite often so i go wish they were 4runners but up here in ny rarely

driving, but skipping forward sounds like you busted some teeth off the ring gear. If I was you and I just wanted if fixed, I would get another complete 3rd from a 4runner in a junkyard. If I didn't want that to happen again, I would do the axle mod to get the tacoma E-locker in there.

yes, this thread is super old. Since I posted in it I have broken my elocker ring gear in my 4th gen and replaced it. I am at the point now where the only thing I would put in the rear of the super heavy 4th gen would be a Tundra 10.5 with custom drilled shafts or a Ford Sterling 10.5 with custom drilled shafts. It seems like everything smaller is just going to explode on the trail.

4 of the easiest upgraded diff options are:

  • Just Diffs 8.2" swap
  • Currie D60 High Pinion or F9 based
  • ECGS D60 based Low Pinion
  • Diamond 9.5" rear diff
Front Range Offroad can build a Diamond full float 9.5" diff that retains factory wheel bearings/sensors. The first and only full float to do that, that I know of.
But once you break an open OEM 8" gearset I think if you add a locker and solid pinion spacer on the rebuilt gearset you are good for a while.
