Axle wrap is back/Help Identifying Noise

What I was experiencing would only occur every once in a while - especially if I had to make a hard stop. After the hard stop, when releasing my foot off the brake, I would feel the thump.

Mine did exactly what you have described, what is going to happen if i ignore it, Is it going to make it worse ?.

Don't ignore it, just grease it. I guess if you ignored it long enough, you could end up damaging the slip yoke. It needs lubrication.

All slip joint driveshafts from all makers will stick if not lubed.Alot are so called permanently sealed but really that just means "sealed til the warranty is permanently gone".....hello GM and your 2-3 clunk.Fords and Jeeps do the same thing. It's when it gets cold out and the metal shrinks lowering the tolerances is when it's noticed usually.

The driveshafts should be lubed every 5k Miles per the "Toyota Maintenance Guide" that everyone should have gotten. Toyota calls the driveshaft a propeller shaft.I just lube mine while I'm waiting for all my oil to drain out. There are 6 zerk fittings in all on these, with 3 for the front driveshaft and 3 on the rear driveshaft. I personally have Aeroshell 33 in my grease gun but the new stuff is 33MSAeroShell Grease 33 - Shell Aviation It's used on almost all airplanes and some of the best grease out there. It's about $15-20 for a tube but I've had the same one in my gun for years . I only put 4 or 5 pumps in the slip joints and I also wipe off right around where it goes in and put a really really thin coat there. No clunk at all and 23k+ miles.

Dealer techs will skip lubing alot of time or skip the zerk fitting if it's hard to get to, since there is no way to prove if they did it or not, especially when most people don't know what they are even supposed to be doing or what to look for. That's why I do all my own maintenance.

it's really sad that this is true. the worst part is that those parts will probably fail at 36,001 miles.

Buy yourself a set of ramps, a grease gun, and a tube of grease. It isn't hard. I'm not very mechanically inclined and I can manage it.

There is a new TSB out now for the drive shaft clunk when coming to a stop for those that have it. Apparently they have a new design and will replace it. Maybe I'll quit lubing mine so it will get it and get a new design one.lol

4WD Rear Propeller Shaft (Driveshaft) Clunk/Thunk Noise (T-SB-0040-12)

Some 4WD equipped 2010 – 2012 model year SR5 and Trail grade 4Runner vehicles may exhibit a clunk/thunk noise from the rear of the vehicle or a “bump-from-behind” sensation just before a stop or when accelerating from a stop. Improvements have been implemented on the rear propeller shaft (driveshaft) to reduce this condition.

thanks for bumping this and posting the tsb - my truck exhibits this problem and is under TCUV warranty.

Gary - many thanks for the update. Mine has done this since new, and lubing only temporarily postpones the inevitable ... happens every stop now.

I find it unacceptable that a vehicle in its 5th generation of manufacture (still) exibits this annoying trait. I'll be stopping at the dealership today to see what they say.

EDIT: Started a new thread, here.

I did this in anticipation that 5G TSB's find their way into the General forum along with the others.

Regarding TSBs when out of warrantee. … what is the cost? Parts? Labor? Both ?

Edit: nevermind. Didn't realize the power train warrantee is 60k. I'm still covered. Woot!
