Axle wrap is back/Help Identifying Noise

I had it in my FJ and now 1000kms into ownership my 4R TE is showing the symptoms of axle wrap. Well, axle wrap is a normal occurance, but if the slip yokes are not well lubricated they start to stick which results in a *thump* when you let off the brakes after stopping. My dealership claimed there was nothing that could be done before so I suppose I'lll have to fix this again myself on my TE. I haven't seen it mentioned yet on this forum, but I thought new owners should be aware of this problem.

Time to break out the grease gun!

Hmmmm....I've heard a *thumb* a couple times, was not sure what it was at a stop or slow speed (cargo area empty and no bumps for the receiver to make noise). I will keep an ear out to see if it does it again, just under 5k. Interesting.

I have the same thing going on. A nice little "thump" after releasing the brake from a stand still. Kind of annoying.

It is fairly easy to get grease into the slip yokes? Any particular type of grease you recommend?

I'm not an expert, but there should be zerk fittings for adding grease with a grease gun. Maybe someone else can find out or knows what the recommended grease is? My friend did it for me last time, but this time I'll probably do it myself. If you google Toyota Slip yoke, you will find lots of info.

Driveshaft thump in 4Runners... It's kinda like discovering the seat creaks! :whipping2 (That's sarcasism in case you missed it ) The trick is to get Toyota to actually do something. Maybe as Toyota tries to rebuild the image they'll be more aggressive with these issues. I can tell you so far it looks a little more promising, you guys get a trans TSB, we have the lag but no fix

Help Identifying Noise

So i have been riding with my radio off since the Ravens lost to the Steelers.. (I cant stand pop-rock or miserable sports talk fans) And with the radio I noticed a sound while in the drive though line. As I sit at an idle with my foot on the brake everything is normal, but as I release the brake a "thud"/"ding" occurs.

I am not very automotive technical and have an appointment with my dealership next friday. I would really like to have some kind of vocabulary they will understand when I go in to address this problem. FYI- I made the appt for an my first oil change at 2200 miles and because I feel the transmission shift/engaging has developed a noticable jerking action... could these be linked?

PS - Got about 6-9" of snow yesterday and took the 4R out... WOW its handling and 4wd are impressive when compared with my old Explorer! Im very glad to have made the switch and found this forum. Thank me, thank you!

I get a weird noise also from the rear brakes that I only hear in drive thru's, mainly cause thats the only time I have my window down to hear it. It sounds like a little ding as well. Of course at the moment I cannot remember if I hear it when I apply the brake or release it.

Anyways, its gonna be a hard one to explain/prove to the dealer. Good Luck, let me know what it is. I still stop OK so I'm not gonna worry about my noise till it gets louder, then I'll know something is really out of whack.

Same here...only hear it at drive thru's with radio off and window down. I am pretty sure it is when I apply the breaks and the vehicle does its dive. I vaguely remember reading something about this in another thread but cant remember which one.

I haven't noticed any out of the ordinary sounds coming from the brakes. Only noise when its been sitting for a while and a film of rust develops on the rotors, but that disappears after driving it.

As for the transmission jerk, does it seem to happen around the 1-2 shift or if you let off of the accelerator to coast and depress the accelerator again?

Metallic noise when in gear with brake on

Hi, I just got my 4runner about 3 weeks ago. After about 300 miles I pulled into my garage (where it is quiet) and had the windows all down (probably the first time since it was first warm day) and no radio on. While I was still in gear applying the brakes I heard a loud metallic sound, kind of grinding noise. Scary! I shut down engine and came back a little while later, starting it up and put it in gear with brakes, and no noise. Frustrating! After many experiments, I found it would do it after driving a few miles and things warmed up, and you could not hear it unless you were in a very quiet place. My dealer was great, Precision Toyota in Tucson, and the mechanic got it and drove into an empty parking garage and heard it and crawled under it. He found the noise is in the muffler, a bad baffle that is loose and vibrating. They have ordered the replacement and I am waiting for it to arrive and have them install it. I hope that takes care of it!

Thats exactly where I'll start taking a closer when I find somewhere away from the snow this weekend. I'll let you all know how it goes.

I have axle wrap thumping too. But, no one seems to know what to do about it. I don't want to take to dealership because they will charge me an arm and a leg. This seems to be a recurring issue for many Toyota's. Just because it's not killed anyone, why hasn't it gotten a recall? How does something get on a recall list. I love my 4-Runner and originally thought it was the transmission, but after much research realize it is an axle wrap problem.

Yes, not only this issue, but also stinky catalytic converters, and it's just a matter of time before we see 5th gen guys complaining about seized pistons in their front calipers. Way to go Toyota!

My dealer lubed the slip yokes for me when I complained about the problem. If you insist on them doing this, they will do it for you. You just need to be persistent.

Ask them to do this when you go in for an oil change and complain about the thump so they get this taken care of for you. They may tell you that you don't need it done, but insist on it and they will do it.

I have the exact symptom, since new I believe.

I don't hear anything, rather I can feel it. My take is it's the transmission shifting (from 2 down to 1).

Happens at a complete stop, exactly as I take my foot off the brake. Doesn't happen every time, and I've just considered it a quirk of the tranny vs. a malfunction.

This is over me...can this be prevented? Is this caused by engaging 4x4 in dry concrete and steering?
