Phase 2 of rear storage has begun. And I finally found a spot i'm happy with for OBA.
I will be covering the plastic and wood areas around the compressor with aluminum to dissipate heat. Upgraded wire was previously run so i'm g2g.
These 3 carpeted pieces are the uprights and home of a future drawer once i find a 32" slide in happy with (price & quality). The top pice will be flat and cover the wheel well. And of course will be carpeted. I'm also making it removable for future mods
. The drawer will house all the dry goods, food prep and service stuff. Ther will also be a slide u see the drawer for a 24" work surface ( wife's request).

Second Audit of gear and I forgot TP and a cutting board. I'm really looking forward to a roof rack soon.
This has been a journey for us as we near the time we can drive off into the wild for extended times looking for adventure. Checklists on top of check lists, budgets and cost estimates over and over. Can't wait to get out there! Here comes Overland Expo West 2017 and on to open road.

OK, moved this where it should have been. For some reason I posted it some spark plug thread...
Changed out all fluids and crush washers on front and rear diffs and the TC. Was pretty dark, but not much on the magnets. Also installed a phone holder I got for $9.00
Ordered stuff to extend diff breather.

Got a roof rack. Needed a place for the OzTent. Most of what I do is copycat of good ideas found here on t4r.org. The rack is no exception.

Did the roll pin in the steering column thingy. It was super SUPER easy. The biggest PITA was the stupid tilt springs. Was going to get it welded but the roll pin shearing off in an accident sounds safer. I felt I had to do this after driving down a mounting in high winds (not fun). Also did the test to make sure it was the slip joint.
UPDATE: Tires, DO NOT buy or reccomend Goodyear Wrangler Authority tires from Wal-Mart. They are total garbage.
Noise: Horrible. Absolutely horrible.
Handling: Offroad excellent, On road, avoid wet, sand, dirt, snow, potholes,
cement and blacktop. crappy handling and did I mention the NOISE.
Service: This is Wal-Mart special, Bad service and techs that dont care to
balance tires correctly. PLUS they broke a wheel stud then
refused to do a rotate and balance job.
**** I am convinced that 3 of the 4 tires are actually out of round or have failing belts due to the odd wear i'm getting, even on the back tires. Or Wal-Mart is absolutely inept at balancing tires.

Let me kick the dust off this for a minute! I’ve come to the conclusion I can spend a lot of time here or a lot of time out doing the stuff. So that’s what i’ve been doing.
Built out my rear storage finally!
The fram was assembled with T-Nuts sanded ply and aluminum angle.
Just a test fit, making sure there is room for the carpet over the edges.
I knew I would use all this paint again someday... Pressing carpet to ply.
Glued down and cured. Thank god for all the box cutters I accumulated from all those crappy retail jobs.
Putting an access door in. This is for air hose and attachments and some future plumbing:dancin:
All the crap I have/had to wire in...
Awaiting the Group 34 AGM.
Ended up with a 31 inch deep drawer. I cant afford Lock in lock outs but managed a simple no fuss locking mechanism my self.
Next on the list is to get the 2/0 guage and run wire. Im thinking inside the frame and up through the floor under passenger...not sure yet. Then the 100w semi flexible solar panel on the roof. Have to do some floor plan arrangement on the rack to see if that will fit. I have 3 Plano boxes that need room too.

Before we talk about the fun stuff I’d like to express how crappy the ITRE’s that come on NAPA racks are. My DS one went to poop within a year, i’ve suffered and my garbage tires (another story) suffered. So I bought a Moog ITRE to fix the sloppy DS one. Was easy enough of a job...and at least the Moog are from Japan. I don’t feel that paying the current rip off price of $150 ish for a Toyota one is necessary. I don’t do heavy wheeling so time will tell.
Now.....to the fun stuff.
Sooo After a long trip on Bloody Basin road to sheeps bridge and the south on the Great Western Trail for 40 miles i’ve come to the conclusion that my LC 8.5 wraps just can’t handle all the weight. Been bottoming out a lot :-/ Time For some 861’s?
Bloody Basin is relatively easy and it ends at a sheeps bridge and has many cool Indian artifacts along the way from hieroglyphs to ruins. There is also an old stone cabin. Trail starts in high plains and ends at the Verde River where there is an area that is fed by hot springs (nature’s jacuzzi). 2/3 of the way in is part of The Great Western Trail that takes you north in to Strawberry. Personally i’m slightly obsessed with The Great Western Trail and wonder if anyone’s done it from the Mexico border to the Canadian border. It’s apparently not off road the whole way, but most of it.
Been doing a lot of videos and photos of our journeys and overall 4runner progress with a DJI Spark and DSLR if you haven’t noticed.
Drove past 3 REI’s just as an excuse to go up to Flagstaff and get in the woods and snow.....and buy some Keen Targhee iii’s.
April apparently we are doing a spur of the moment trip and Joshua Tree in California is in the books!

I would have liked to have used a lock in lock out slide but they are just a littel too rich for my blood. I used Kreg pocket holes, 3 per side and some really good wood glue. For the bottom I slotted the sides, added glue and slid the bottom in, same way you would build kitched drawers I suppose. I wanted it to be strong and I think it will last, only time will tell. I think I may run some aluminum channel around the top for strength. Was trying to figure out a way to make a sliding work surface on top of the drawer.

Looking good. Any plans for AUX fuel tank or built-in water storage? I'm thinking about doing something similar with my 4runner but it would be nice to have some more range and the ability to haul some clean water without taking up too much cargo space.
