Decided to start a build thread since I will be doing a lot to my 4R in the next few weeks.

Aussie locker and USA Standard Gear differential master install kit will be installed Friday.
Control arm skids need to be painted and put on.
Took rear drive shaft off today to be rebuilt.
Shackles and steering rack bushings will be here on Friday.
Rocksliders are next on my hit list.

LIFT:
Front: Toytec Coilovers
Rear: Sonoran Steel 1.2A

TIRES: BFG KM2 265/75/16

MODS:
Deckplate
Intake Silencer Removal
Two hot power outlets on passenger side of console (power controlled with toggle switch)

NEW PARTS (done in last six months):
All ball joints
Tie rod ends
Valve cover gaskets
Spark Plugs
Starter

Driveshaft ready for it's trip to Phoenix to be rebuilt.

USA Standard Gear differential master install kit arrived today. Now that's it's here, it and the Aussie locker will be installed tomorrow. Going to tear it all apart tonight. :guitar2:

For personal reasons and from past experience, I don't list my location online. If I were to try and meet with a member than that's a specific situation.

3rd member out and ready for Aussie locker, bearings, seals and cross pin to be installed tomorrow. Everything looks good, especially for 185,000+. But hey, it's a Toyota!

My rebuilt drive shaft came back home today. $285 for new joints, ball, cleaned, balanced and painted.

Why are you rebuilding your diff? Are you re-gearing your diff? Save the rebuild kit for another day.


If all your doing is installing an aussie locker, you can do that without bearing replacement.

You won't have to shim or pretension anything. Just drop in.

I know I don't have to, but....While I have it apart for the locker, I decided it can't hurt to replace the bearings, seal, crush sleeve, etc...Since it has 185,000+ miles.

If it not leaking and there is no noise, I say just drop the locker in and call it a day.


There is so much work involved in trying to install a crush sleeve. You might end up creating more problems then trying to prevent.

setting a diff up is not fun and it's quite tedious... So x2 what singtoe said. Unless something is wrong or you know EXACTLY what your doing, I say just drop the locker in, replace the gear oil and call it a day. After about 200-300 miles of usage I would drain it again and refill it with some better gear oil, maybe royal purple.

All the work is being done by a professional, not me. I have installed my lift, replaced bjs, tie rods, cv shafts, valve cover gaskets and etc....but I don't really want to mess with rear end. This is my first time taking one out and I am going to let a pro do the rest of the work. I'm just saving labor cost taking it out my self and taking 3rd to the shop. They are only charging me $170.

Aussie locker, 3rd member and axles are back in. Putting in drive shaft and bleeding brakes next. Breather mod and new shackles after that.

Tested Aussie locker out today off road. Wow. Makes things so easy! Performed on road as expected and not annoying or loud at all. Went to Chivo Falls and Chimney Rock today ( outside Tucson, AZ). 8 hours of off roading and fun. Pics to follow.

Very cool! My last 4x4 just had a lsd rear, I couldn't believe how much of a difference the locker made once I got the 4runner.

I'm in the Tucson area too if you ever want to hit a trail!

Removed chrome fender trim and mud flaps. Modified rear mud flaps to have some what of a clean look as opposed to the exposed metal brackets.
