Backup Camera not displaying, help

Just installed pioneer 1400 nex and it works great I did all of the speaker power illumination everything like that right but the backup camera when I put in reverse is just black. I connected the rca cable to the Video input and the little red wire that came off of that to the reverse gear signal input. I did the power and ground from this video as stated. Any ideas?

Just to confirm, under the dash you connected to the red/yellow wire correct? On my unit I had to connect the reverse gear indicator wire to the red/yellow wire under the steering column. In the video you mentioned he has it connected to an RCA cable. Even though I have an alpine unit, it shouldn’t make any difference as the red/yellow wire is what signals my head unit the vehicle is in reverse and activated the camera.

It’s odd because it goes into reverse the screen is just black. When switched out of reverse it goes back to the regular screen it normally is.

Oh I see that’s weird, could the camera be a dud then? It’s getting the signal since it’s switching like you mentioned.

I just got done posting an update on my build thread on an on going backup camera issue. My issue when I installed the backup camera the first time last November was that it would not flip by the Reverse Trigger. The 2 things I did differently was the Kit, and I pull the ACC Fuse and reinstalled it. This time it worked!

I don't know if that'll work for you but its work a shot. Good luck

Did you tap the reverse signal wire? That little red wire coming off the RCA cable is a hold over I’m prettt sure for power to the camera if you didn’t supply power another way.

Take a look at this thread I made awhile back. It might be helpful to knowing if you hooked up your thing correctly.

Like someone else said, if the screen is going black when you put it in reverse, it's obviously getting a signal to the HU. I would think that means either your camera is bad, your ground is bad or the cable from the camera to the HU is bad. That's just based off of what I remember about mine when I hooked it up.

go into settings in the pioneer, unit, camera battery polarity, toggle it between the different options, i have a pioneer avh4400, my reverse cam only works on battery polarity setting

So the head unit is getting the switching signal from the reverse wire - that's good. It's not getting a signal from the camera. There could be several causes for that, and here are some:

• Camera output is not wired to the receiver's camera input properly.
• Camera is not getting power from the reverse wire - both the camera and the receiver need to tap into the reverse wire. The camera can be wired to switched power so it is always on (when the key is in the "ON" position), but I hear that drastically reduces the lifespan of the camera. Double-check the camera wiring for power - if it's not getting power, that would explain the black screen.
• Camera polarity setting needs to be toggled in the receiver (as mentioned above).
• Camera is faulty.

I saw it work one time yesterday when i hadnt finished the routing of the wires up to the tailgate and I was like cool it works lemme properly wire it and then now it wont work but Ill try that polarity thing. But atleast I know its not faulty.

What camera are you using? When I was testing my cameras I ran 2 wires directly to the battery and then plugged in the camera to the radio to see if it would work. Maybe you camera requires constant 12v power?

Thats the one I got, is there another place I could draw ground and power from other than the tail light to try? Needs to be in similar area for wiring purposes but I have no idea why it does work anymore since I saw it work one time and all.

So probably not your issue. Mine worked . . . until I put the back window down and I severed the wires from the camera in the liftgate - had to learn to make sure to secure the wires out of the way of the rear window glass

Took the whole thing out and the wires are in tact. Would this be the worst idea to attach these wires to this Dewalt battery just to see if it works?

Any 12v battery will work.
If you have ruled out the camera polarity issue.
Only other probable cause may be a shorted cable.
Try a new AV cable while powering the camera from another source, ..maybe running a test cable directly from the car battery.

Pretty sure that camera requires constant power. I think I actually used a different brand, but have tested that brand as well. If I recall correctly, the manufacturer calls for a constant power source. I can't remember what I tied mine into, but i want to say it's off the cigarette lighter or something else ignition triggered.

If you want to test the power, I definitely recommend running test wires directly to your car battery, and seeing if you still have the same problem.

Yea I wired mine in with a fuse next to the steering wheel for power
