Bad Service... No oil change till 10k?

I'm with philsey right in front door to Gm or owner & get loud ! Oil changes used to be in THAT crowd every 3k , but new oil 10k is good & on son's 05 every 5k !

Just kinda blows my mind how many people seems like they are against an early oil change. You guys never do anything nice for your cars?

Yeah, I do something nice for my truck... I drive it.

Changing oil early is nothing more than a waste of natural resources and $$. The oils are so good nowadays, and without this being direct injection or turbo, you're seriously good to go. And by the way, as someone mentioned dark oil earlier, color of the oil means very little with respect to how much life it has left.

10k miles is the new 3k.

"If Toyota's gonna do it for free every 10k I'm good."

Heck, mine came with 2 oil changes from Toyota and 2 more changes from the dealer.
And after the first 4 years I'll still have 2 years left on the zero deductible Toyota extended warranty.

Come on people, Toyota has been recommending 7500 mile dino oil changes forever and I'd have those done at 6k or 7k. And Toyotas still last 200k or 300k or more.

I'm firmly in the camp that says, "Stop throwing your money away."

John

the 2016 T4R I own I did the 3K oil change because I was going on a 4K mile trip. so instead of going to dealership and playing games , vehicle 6 months old 3K miles total I did the engine oil change.

the engine oil looked as new as it came out of the bottle. the filter was as clean as the one I put in. it did take 45 min for all that oil to drain out though and the engine was at the 186deg f. .

So I would say that 10K miles and 1 year time is when your at the max on the engine oil servicing. if its on heavy duty use 5K-7K would be good.

so I put 4K miles on the vehicle after I changed the oil . I installed 6.5QTS so that the dip stick shows it exactly at the full mark exactly ! 4K miles later oil is exactly at the full mark ,same as when I filled it . pretty good ..

now on the rear diff gear oil well @3K miles that looked like Mississippi mud ! so that was changed .. all the other fluids looked good except that rear diff gear oil .......nasty..

Took the 2017 5th Gen Limited in for its very first service at a dealer today didn't leave with a warm and fuzzy.

We have a scheduled service package on this truck so we took it in for some basic stuff... one of which was an oil change.

We end up getting the car back and they didn't even change the oil... told me it wasn't needed until 10k so we decided NOT to do it for you, on top of that, thanks for not replacing or breaking all my valve stem caps.

I know these guys arnt here to white glove my truck, but a little attention to detail goes a long way.

Personally I like to change the oil a bit early on a new engine, but the attitude I received about it was just really bizarre.

When did you guys do your first oil change?

you are lucky they did not put some dents or scratches on it .. if they rotated the tires you best get the torque wrench out your wheels may fall off.

you better fix those tire air valves quickly.

I really feel this thread went off topic...

The point of this thread was NOT to debate the 10k interval oil change, but was to complain about something NOT getting done, after I asked for it to get done.

From a service standpoint, its unacceptable... I dont have time to deal with shit like this... When I ask for something to get done it should get done.

If they were not going to do it, then they should have told me upfront and not put it on the service ticket.

Its not until I actually went though the documentation, post service, and asking about it, I got an answer.

Apparently the dealer has contacted me, they know they are in the wrong, and now they are trying to suck me off to make sure I dont make a big deal about this.

Someone dropped the ball over there and they know it.

I have zero tolerance for ppl like this. I am immediately at the SM's or GM's door if I encounter a turd like this. I operate under the assumption that managers want/need to know if an employee is treating customers this way. I will not spend my money for any product, and then be treated poorly, nosiree Jack.

I go back to my Honda dealer, and my Toyota dealer because they give me excellent service. I also make it a point to see the GM and tell him why I'm back.

Wow... someone who actually gets it.

Everyone else just wants to throw punches about 10k oil intervals when that isn't the core of the issue here, its piss poor service.

I'm sure if anyone else was my shoes that day, you would be pretty pissed about it too.

All this does is reinforce why I wrench on my own cars... its been years since my 4th Gen went to a dealer for service. I do everything myself on every car that I own...

If I may throw in my $0.02: you're going to cause yourself a lot of discomfort in life with worrying of this sort. I am a worrier so I am speaking from experience. I am so much happier when I can put some trust in other people, verify that they did what they were supposed to, and weigh the cost/benefit of taking action if things aren't up to par. The valve stem caps, for instance, just aren't worth the trouble because a tech forgot to put one on. Just buy a few and keep them in the truck as replacements and move on. Very few things in life are so bad that they are worth sacrificing your health and, without a doubt, worrying about things like this will affect you in the long term.

I completely agree with you... but how do you build trust when someone make mistakes like that?

The "if you want it done right, do it yourself" attitude I had for the longest time and its hard to get rid of it... As a small business owner it took a lot for me to hire and trust people to do a job I asked them to do. You eventually build a team you trust, but it takes time. You have to look at someones actions, not just their words. What I experienced does not build confidence.

That's what I am trying to do here with a new dealer, but we are off to a bad start.

The valve caps are not a big deal... I know it isn't, but to have someone argue with you after pointing it out is asinine. If you were there and heard the response with your own ears your jaw would have hit the floor. I couldn't help buy laugh because they accused me of trying to do something shady... to get new caps for free...

There are other Toyota dealers I do business... I have always had an excellent experience when them. Whoever was running that team was doing an excellent job. Unfortunately I have moved since.

To be fair, your initial post can be deceiving. You state:

"We have a scheduled service package on this truck so we took it in for some basic stuff... one of which was an oil change".

That can be taken 2 ways:
1- you walked in the door and stated clearly "Hello, i'm here for the 5k, PLUS i'd like the oil changed."

OR
2- you walked in, asked for the 5k service and assumed the oil would be changed then got angry when they refused to change the oil. Not really sure why they would, but whatever.

I guess another question would be, what is this "scheduled service package"? Is that something the dealer sold you or are you just referring to the included services on all new 4runners?

I think what people are trying to get across here is (whether you think it is right or wrong), the 5k service (and all of the services on the 5s) don't have recommended oil changes.

I can only imagine what kind of person you are to deal with face to face if you refer to the dealer as now trying to "suck you off", but i'll just remind everyone here that clear communication between people and parties can solve most problems before they start.

Perhaps I could have stated the situation a bit clear in my own post.. so for that I apologize. I can assure you I was calm and courteous to the service staff. I myself an in service based profession and generally like to treat people how I would want to be treated.

I went in for the 5k scheduled, plus an oil change which I did request. I figured while I am here, lets just do that too.

I would have been more than happy to pay for that oil change if it wasn't scheduled or included.

They basically said they would take care of it, then then decided not to do it because it wasn't part of that 5k.

I communicated what I wanted in a clear manner, but it just didn't get done.

you never said you asked for it, thus my initial comment.

They'll send you a survey (they're supposed to per Toyota corp), score 'em low.

Plainly states various places that free oil change is at 1 year or 10k miles, and 2 years or 20k - whichever comes first. I had mine changed 1st time at about 3k miles and I specifically told them I was paying for it. At 1 year they paid for it. I am about to go in for my last free change at 2 years - currently have only 13 k on it. Will change my own in future at about 7-8k. Still undecided if I will stay with 0w-20.

I share in your concern but then I am old school when it comes to oil change and I absolutely dislike dealerships. Stay away from them if at all possible. Some seem to think just because its synthetic, engine has been run and tested, that its okay to not change it for 10,000 miles. I suggest this, if it does concern you, take a look at the coloration of your oil at intervals. If it seems to be getting dark prior to 10K, change it. I also suggest you do it yourself. Yes it is a bit complicated with the cartridge but as one that NEVER takes his vehicles to dealerships, you will be doing yourself a great service and you will feel a great sense of accomplishment after its over. Here is a great link to follow concerning your oil change.

Many thanks to antman for a great DIY :-)

"Everyone else just wants to throw punches about 10k oil intervals when that isn't the core of the issue here, its piss poor service."

Saving you money is "piss poor service"? Maybe they simply didn't want to see you throwing your money away on something that isn't useful. They were looking out for you. :) So are we.

A 10k service interval is only 2500 miles more than the dino oil standard for normal driving for the past 30 years or so. A 3k service interval has been a waste of money since at least the '80s.

As Time Goes By: A History of Vehicle Service Intervals - VehicleMD

"An owners manual for 1984 Oldsmobile vehicles again touts GM’s standby of 12 months/7,500 miles “normal” or three months/3,000 miles “severe.”"

really 4 pages for this shit? take it somewhere else or do it yourself.... they were trying to tell you that you are wasting your money and their time. If they don't want to take your cash move on to someone that will. Take it to Jiffy Lube they will change your shit twice a day if you want them too.

So.... good service or bad? I guess it is how you look at it.

I read it the other way, too, and that changes things. I did the same thing but I was assuming the first service included an oil change. So, I said I'm here for my first service, then came back and picked it up and noticed the oil hadn't been changed. I asked the service writer about it and he explained that it's 10k intervals for the vehicle and apologized for not telling me that up front. He assumed I knew, so no harm no foul.

You, however, mentioned it when you dropped it off that you wanted an oil change so the time for the service writer to clarify what you want and expect was right then. He didn't so that's a fail. Huge issue? No, as you said, but I understand and agree with your frustration now.

Took mine in at 5K, got a 10k this week

No problems, except for rude service.

And when I got a flat tire at 3 months, the dealer wanted to charge me $28 to fix it. WTF?! Every tire shop in town will do this for free, even if I didn't buy the tires there. And so I did get it fixed for free at Les Schwab.

I wasn't really nice to the person on the phone. I'm working on it, really. You can be fined for dropping the F-bomb on the phone, as it is a violation of the FCC's 7 dirty words.

I feel you pain! Same thing has happened to me twice now, the 2nd time being the other day. The dealership is picking up my 4Runner and dropping it back off for the inconvenience (both paid for changes, not free).

I have mine done around 7,500 as that is when it is convenient for me to have the work done. Having the work done anytime from May - Sept is a 'no-go' as I am too flat out with work and other commitments then.

The 1st time they said it did not need to be done I was waiting 3 hours in their nice 'waiting room' and could not believe they did not come out and say anything about 'do you still want this done', they just made the decision even though I elected it specifically on the service appt. Found out when I went to pay, was not happy. SM said it would not happen again....until the other day.

Wrote in CAPS on the on-line service request that it NEEDS to be done, AND on the paper key drop form, underlined! They still did not do it at just under 7,500k, so that is why they are getting it.

Part of me appreciates the dealership for not wanting to charge you for something you do not 'need', and I'm sure they get enough crap for it already that they 'look good' for not doing it, but not if I specifically ask, multiples times, to have it done.

At least call/approach me and say you are close in mileage, do you want it done or next time, don't make the choice for me.

I usually only put on about 8k-9k a year anyway.

I tip alcohol

I do the same thing. I tip heavy with service industry jobs, done the work and I appreciate quality and good service. My local dealer gave me a great deal, is treating me great so far in service and I'll buy every vehicle from them from here on out.:clap2:

A bottle of Jack Daniels or (recently) Fireball goes a long ways towards lubricating relationships.
