Bad Service... No oil change till 10k?

Took the 2017 5th Gen Limited in for its very first service at a dealer today didn't leave with a warm and fuzzy.

We have a scheduled service package on this truck so we took it in for some basic stuff... one of which was an oil change.

We end up getting the car back and they didn't even change the oil... told me it wasn't needed until 10k so we decided NOT to do it for you, on top of that, thanks for not replacing or breaking all my valve stem caps.

I know these guys arnt here to white glove my truck, but a little attention to detail goes a long way.

Personally I like to change the oil a bit early on a new engine, but the attitude I received about it was just really bizarre.

When did you guys do your first oil change?

You have to demand them that you want the oil change. I went in at 3k Miles and they keep saying I don't need it. So I have to talked to the manager. Of course, I got my first free oil change after that.

10k is the recommended interval unless you have driven in extreme conditions (heavy towing or lots of off-road).

10K. Your engine was run, tested, drained and refilled with fresh synthetic before it ever left the Tahara plant in Japan. Unless you have been off road extensively or towing heavy stuff there is no need to do it sooner. But hey, it's yours. Change it every 500 miles if you want.

I read 10k...and the first 25k or two years Toyota foots the bill. I setup my appointment at 5k, they changed it without question. I plan on 5k change s for basically my own feelings. I know good synthetic will go 10k without issue...but it's in my head and since my dealer didn't care, I'll do it.

I do take my Cummins out to the 10k oil changes though. :wacko:

10k is too long for me, even for synthetic. Ill dump it every 5k regardless.

I have a feeling I am soon going to revert to doing all the service myself again... when you have "included" cough, pre-paid services you feel a bit silly dusting off the creeper and getting under the truck.

The dude at the dealership was just a dick about it... kinda caught me off-guard... even the tire caps. He basically told me that I was trying to pull fast one, on my brand new car that's never been to service anywhere else. He then proceeded to tell me, "we don't do stuff like that here", and then blamed me for not noticing it when doing the "walk around" after service.

Totally blew my mind.

Never had that bullshit with any other brand or dealer...

This is one area I've seen across the board in all my years with different motor sports. Oil debates. You can literally have the oil engineers tell a person (myself included) that they are wasting their money on changing the oil too often....and they still won't believe you.:director:


It's a mental issue. I have it. I use top quality products and I over do it.


I've got a boat with a 20k outboard on it. Yamaha tells me every 100 hours. I do every twenty. Stupid I know...but I feel better about it. My dad did this to me. He was a mechanic and does 3k mile changes TO THIS DAY and still calls pennzoil junk. LOL. Old school thinking carries over, despite the data.

That's good to know... but I'm good with some fresh oil... I don't put on that many miles on my trucks so after a while it just feels stale.

Not like its bad to do it... just not stretching the dollar at that point.

I do the same thing. I tip heavy with service industry jobs, done the work and I appreciate quality and good service. My local dealer gave me a great deal, is treating me great so far in service and I'll buy every vehicle from them from here on out.:clap2:

it is every 10k miles or more, the FREE appointments are more often - tire rotations, fluid checks etc.

you have to be very specific if you want to have the oil changed. they did exactly what they are supposed to do.

As to the stem caps - one of their tasks is to reinflate the tyres.

P.S. (And i'll catch flack for that one) my bum-meter feels that the truck is happier with the ~6K mile oil changes...

I think it would be pretty obvious that its one of their tasks... to check and adjust air pressure of the tires.

But its not their job to destroy and or loose my caps. Again... I am not asking for much, just a little attention to detail.

If you loose it, break it, replace it. No idea why it should be on my dime... or in your case dyme.

You can get it done, just say you want the 10K mi service early. You technically paid for 2 o/c, when you want them done is up to you. It's not a BMW that's CBS. They will tell you to piss off and come back at 15K mi. I've had it done early on a few Toyota's under the free maintenance. You just need to insist that you want it done early and understand that after the 2 are done, you have to pay.

Never waste your time with dealers who provide bad service.

You also don't need to change your oil every 5k, but that's up to you.

I do mine every 5k comes out to every 6-8months, if i waited till 10k like Toyota says it would be over a year in between, little to long

i changed my oil at first 3000 miles mainly because I wanted to change the drain bolt to a drain valve and upgrade my plastic oil filter housing to a aluminum one. If I didn't do that, i would be fine at changing my oil every 10k miles.

I probably would change the oil myself though, mainly because I don't trust the monkeys wrenching for toyota, due to the upgraded skid plates, drain valve, and upgraded oil filter housing but thats just me.
