Bad wheel bearing

Hi all,

I have a 2005 4runner 4wd SR5.

After doing research I found that one of my front wheel bearings is bad. My symptoms are there is a loud noise and a vibration coming through the steering wheel. When i'm driving straight or turn left the noise is evident. When I turn right, the noise disappears. I know noise travels but it does sound like its coming from the drivers front side.

I did find a good youtube video on how to replace it but my dilemma is which side is has the bad bearing. I don't think that the driver and passenger side bearings are interchangeable, so I just need to get the right one.

Jack up truck grab tire at 12 and 6 and which ever one has play is the bad side
That being said might just want to change both sides
And yes the wheel bearings are interchangeable aide to side
 
Also make sure you change the dust seals on spindle when your doing them
Otherwise you will be doing them again sooner then you may expected
As well as a new o ring

Don't make the mistake of ordering the different parts and thinking you will get it cheaper than what this guy is selling the whole complete unit for. http://www.toyota-4runner.org/bumpe...-front-wheel-bearing-assemblies-anywhere.html I made that mistake, had to send the crap I got back and order from these guys. They are awesome! and by far the cheapest you will find.
 
On my 4runner, when I turned right the sound would go away. This lead me the believe the right side was bad because it got quite when unloaded. Turned out the left side was bad. Something with our suspension geometry actually made the bearing quiet when loaded, turning right.

Thanks for posting this link! I need to do my bearings this spring as my seals are both shot. The only places online I find with complete bearings are $$$

Ok figured out its my right front wheel. So now I went to this site and there are two of them, but unsure which I need. I'm looking for the bearing and wheel hub. However the picture is confusing me as it keeps pointing to the same item.

Update:

So I had called Mid Atlantic Toyota Parts and asked them which part I needed. They couldn't tell me. So I wound up getting one from BluePit bearings. The job itself isn't tough but the worst part was the passenger side had badly rusted and fused itself against the mount. Took a while to get it off but once I did, I cleaned off the rust and put the new one back on.

The really loud noise was gone but the same symptoms remained, some noise and it disappeared when I turned right. So I got another one and replaced the driver side. Oddly enough that side wasn't too hard to get off.

So now my 4runner runs very smooth and quiet, just like new.

Had I taken it to the Toyota dealer, I would have easily paid over $1000 for both.
 
I just recently had both the drivers side and passenger side wheel bearings replaced, including dust covers, for $530 at a local tire shop. Dealer wanted $700 per side for a grand total of $1400. That is insane to me. I would recommend finding a tire shop or CV axle specialist and see what they charge. Might save a bunch of time.

My symptoms were a hum at 60mpg and up. Slight turn to the right and the hum went away. Slight turn to the left and the hum was still there. Turns out the driver-side bearing wasn't as bad as the passenger, but it was on it's way to being a problem. Figured I'd rather deal with it now than 6 months from now.

Yikes! Cost me 185 a piece for the bearings and a couple hours of my time. Easy to do really.
