Just taking the other two bolts off I broke them as well. I do not know what the hell is going on with these. Insert is in my spare room now sitting safely until I get the new bolts. Probably grab some grade 8 or 10.9 bolts so I do not run into this again. It is pretty difficult to say the least to snap these bolts without damaging the roof.

Word of advice for you guys that ordered these, watch the bolts very closely. The nut and bolt takes just a brief second to cross thread. I would probably also recommend getting some shorter bolts. They come with lock nuts, that could be why I keep messing them up, who knows.

Finally got around to trying mine out today and I didn't have any issues with the bolts. Since I plan on only using the insert when I have the tent on and need to carry gerry cans I'm going to get rid of the nyloc nuts and replace them with locking washers and regular nuts.

That in and of itself was a driving factor in me buying the Baja. In my search I found the first group buy, which had all the same issues that RiDE's has. When I called for almost a week straight and never got a call back, emailed daily and never got a reply, I determined it was indeed an issue and moved on. I love my rack, so it worked well for me, but GOBI lost $1600+ on me because I went with another company. They eventually got $250 or so of it for the ladder, but that was a big headache for me. I want the HD struts, but I will not deal with them again. I wanted to give RiDE the business because I know he means well, but he can only be as good as they allow him to be, and I do not want ill feelings with a member here when its beyond their control.

I disagree with a lot of comments in this thread.... I will agree that Gobi's customer service does lack or seem non excitant at times, however it will never drive them out of business. They have an extremely sturdy, well designed rack that ships ALL AROUND THE WORLD, yes we are not the only ones and yes they make racks for multiple different vehicles. They make everything in house.... They don't have "minorities" over the boarder making their product fast as they can, to ship it faster etc.... Its all USA materials and all made in house.

I am not one to say bad about another, nor am I one to say good when they suck. But Gobi is pretty dam true to their word and they put out an extremely impressive, well designed and sturdy rack! PERIOD!

Well, if America made a decent car.... I would own one. American products on another hand are a different story... If I can by American, I will, because typically its of a much better quality and is a far more worth while investment. Also unlike most companies nowadays we kind of need to keep some job's in this country before we quite literally become no more than a large piece of auctioned land!

Haha - agreed. I could go on and on about the American condition and why Japan and China crush us in manufacturing, but I won't.

But, if we're talking about build quality: I own a BajaRack and a Gobi ladder, and you wouldn't be able to tell the two apart in terms of quality if they didn't have name brands on them. I think both companies make a very similar product, and I have no complaints about the build quality of either product. I preferred the style of the BajaRack utility rack because of all the low clearance garages I deal with in the DC metro area. In hindsight, I am glad that I chose Baja after dealing with the customer service of Gobi indirectly from my girlfriend who bought me my ladder and HD struts. Same issues as here: "it'll ship tomorrow" and it never ships; never being able to reach Sandra; and then it took them over a month to charge her credit card after we received the items even after she followed-up several times.

Will they go out of business because of it? Probably not because it's such a niche market with very little competition. Companies build new cars and they build new racks. Could they do a much better job dealing with customers? Absolutely. I don't think I've ever heard any real complaints about the build quality of Gobi (just like I haven't heard any *real* complaints about the build quality of Baja other than it being manufactured "over the border"). But, I know that if I email John or Elizabeth at Baja I'll get a response same day and they've consistently shipped when they said they would for all the items I've ordered from them (utility rack, awning mount, roof rack insert, hi-lift mount - all separate orders).

At the end of the day, I don't have the patience to deal with a company that runs things the way Gobi runs things. If I were to place an order with Gobi, you can bet it would be through another company or point of contact like RiDE so I can make it his job to follow-up with them. That's why I bought my Shrockworks skids and Budbuilt sliders through Ducmonsta - so I didn't have to chase the companies. He's the dealer and he gets the attention that the singleton purchaser does not get from these companies because they have too much going on. "Bobby, did it ship yet?" and I get a tracking number in my email 15 minutes later. :thumb3:
