Ball Joints

I just ordered the TACO parts but I'm wondering, since the OTRE is bent opposite on the TACO, should it go on the left side? or does it matter? Will it fit? Now that I think of it, is it threaded in reverse?

In order of your questions:

1. Doesn't matter - they call it 'left' and 'right' but they're interchangeable, I believe.

I've got OTREs and LBJs of the same type/time period on my 4Runner, and have had them on since 130K. (My 4Runner now has 136K on it.) They'll fit just fine. :)
 
I used one of the Toyota OEM parts sites and got the wrong parts since they don't post part numbers anymore.

Can I get confirmation that these are the right part numbers so I can call this order in?
L LBJ $85.60 43330-39366
R LBJ $85.60 43340-39286
L OTRE $35.32 45046-39295
R OTRE $35.32 45047-39175
 
I have made this upgrade and results are:
Firm ride than stock, but turning radius impact. One can notice during parking or tight u turns. Advantage could be on cv, though not sure on the stress on steering rack of any.

A few pages back I posted the information; yours differs in two areas.

1. For some reason you have the 'sides' switched on the OTREs - you've got the right part #'s but have them labeled in the reverse order that I have them. (Not that it matters so long as you get both sides. LOL)

2. The part #'s you have for the LBJs have been superseded by new part #'s.

Here's the information I posted a few pages back. Part #'s are bolded.

Left hand side OTRE - 45047-39175; description on the site is "Steering - Steering gear & linkage - Outer tie rod; Outer tie rod, tacoma, 4wd, left - power rack and pinion 1995 - 2004" (It's the one under "Mechanical" when you do the search)

Right hand side OTRE - 45046-39295; description on the site is "Steering - Steering gear & linkage - Outer tie rod; Outer tie rod, tacoma, 4wd, right - power rack and pinion 1995 - 2004" (Also under "Mechanical")

Left ball joint - OLD part # is 43340-39286; NEW part # is 43340-39585 - description on the site is "Front suspension - Lower control arm - Lower ball joint; Lower ball joint, tacoma, right - 4wd coil spring 1995 - 2000"

Right ball joint - OLD part # is 43330-39366; NEW part # is 43330-39815 - description on the site is "Front suspension - Lower control arm - Lower ball joint; Lower ball joint, tacoma, left - 4wd coil spring 1995 - 2000."

So you got the right #'s for the OTREs, although you have them backwards.

I'd agree with this - frankly, it's not even enough of a difference for me to care. The first few times I went to turn in a tight radius, I had to sit and think about whether or not it had the same turning radius.

But the firmness that the installation imparts, to me, far outweights the 2 or 3 degrees of turning radius one loses.
 
Just ordered everything to do this and from Toyotapartsales.com the total came to $284.44 shipped to my door. I will let you know how the install goes. Thanks for all the work you guys have done on this.

The new TACO parts came in yesterday but but I have to first deal with the rear axle bearing/seal leak before I can start with the front end.

Kung, have you checked for binding when the tie rod pushes outward? Getting back to which way the bend should go, it would make sense to have the bend towards the back to give more room for the OTRE to clear the LBJ and for more leverage. I was looking at these tonight and haven't had a chance to install them yet. For you guys that put them on already, what did you find on your trucks? Is this the reason for the reduced turn radius?

Drcoffee - that is an *EXCELLENT* suggestion, and something I had not even considered. :) :) I've been having a 'problem' (not with binding, but with a small 'ratcheting' noise whenever the wheel's cranked all the way to the right), and this may well be why.

If you mount them back wards - When you make left turns, You truck will go right.

Just kidding. But seriously. If you mount the backwards, the tire will rub badley with the tie rod. FWIW, The tie rod does not touch the ball joint lock to lock.

Well, the tire's definitely NOT rubbing. Even still, I'll probably get out there at lunch (or after work) and 'lock' it both directions, and see what I see up under/behind both tires, to see what might be causing that 'creaking/ratcheting' noise.

But good information to know. :)
 
Ok, despite no rubbing, I have noticed that in both cases, the OTRE 'bend' is towards the FRONT of the vehicle.

So is that the correct configuration? Or did they install them backwards? LOL

Did you physically mount them both ways or are you just speculating? If you look at the picture, there is hardly any angle before it hits the BJ.

I'll have to check, with both of those; I'll probably have to wait until I get home, and jack the front of the vehicle up. If I can't get it today, I had the hobby shop on base mount them, and I'm quite sure that they'd be willing to pull it in and put it up on the hydraulic lift so that I could take pics.
 
Did I miss somewhere in this thread that the taco OTREs don't work with 4runner ball joints? Is this true or just a bad rumor?
 
FYI - I did a bit more research to get the correct part #'s for installing Tacoma LBJs and OTREs on their T4R. Here they are:

I'd advise anyone to run this info on ToyotaPartSales.com (and maybe Toyodiy.com) to double check this, of course; but I believe this is all the correct information. :)

Maybe a dumb question but these part numbers would be the same for 2wd 4runners right. The steering rack isnt different at all between the 2wd and 4wd right?
