Bass and Sub questions. Looking for more bass ideas...

One of the first mods I did to my car was to upgrade my sound system. I ran new front and rear speakers and a new sub off a kenwood 5 channel 1600 (I think) watt amp. I also upgraded to an Alpine Head Unit. For the most part I love my setup but sometimes I feel like the bass is lacking. Before I put in an amp I had my front speakers running off of the stock JBL amp, despite my hatred for the JBL system, I will say that my front 6x9's were kicking like subs and providing a ton of bass. After running to a new amp I can't get the same bass out of them. I have tried messing with the crossover settings and other things but I just can't replicate the sound that they had before. So I'm looking for ideas to increase the amount of bass output from my system. I'm open to adding subs but I'd like to avoid taking up too much space in the cargo area as I sleep and carry things back there fairly often. (for reference I'm currently only running an 8" kicker sub in the factory sub location)

I have a 12" Kicker Solo-Baric in a ported Kicker box...and it is amazing. You've got to run 500 watts RMS to it though.

You can also try adding polly stuffing, i have 2 10" in a sealed box and wanted more boom, added a bunch of the stuffing and it made a world of difference

I have a 12" Kicker Solo-Baric in a ported Kicker box...and it is amazing. You've got to run 500 watts RMS to it though.

not mine but did the same thing, you can buy the stuff from an audio shop or online but that's expensive, go to a fabric store and get the polly stuffing a lot cheaper. My mom gave me a bunch of scraps she had so that is what I used and I love the way it sounds and performs. I kinda understand the which craft behind it but doubt I can do it justice so just look up "polly stuffing sub box" its worth a google. I stapled mine to the inside of the box but you can leave it loose inside the enclose. You using the stock sub enclosure or a new box?

might want to have the sub crossed at 160 to 80. i dont know what deck you have, but on lpf just do full pass, or on amp do full pass and use the deck to do the crossover.

I have a 10" Bazooka powered sub that lives on the floor just behind the driver's seat. Kept it when I sold my Xterra 'cause it provides just the bass level I want, is relatively inexpensive, doesn't need its own amp, and has a quick disconnect for easy removal if needed. Granted, it has to move or come out to fold the rear seats or if I have back seat passengers but that only comes up a handful of times a year.

Not a solution for everyone but wanted to put it out there since you asked.

I wanted a sub that didn't take up cargo room space. I got this idea from another forum member. This is where the factory sub goes. I love it. Had it done Nov 2016, wish I had it done sooner.

I would say try it and if you dont like it remove it, all the stuffing does is trick the sub into thinking that it has more airspace and slows down the sound waves. I never had that factory sub and dont know how tunable the factory sub is, but you may not need to retune it. When i put stuffing in my box it still sounded great and hit alot harder but after i did some more tuning it was amazing how hard my two cheap kickers were hitting, lotts of low bass that just rattles your brain.

Check out the JL Stealthbox. It's a little spendy, but from what I understand they sound great. My buddy had one in his Tundra and it hit hard.

$1100. JL audio sub, JL audio amp, amp wiring, custom box, installation of amp and sub. I'm not an audio guy so I was happy to pay this. Audio parts were around $500, custom box $250, $350 installation.

try and do a ported enclosure, you can gain more sound with the same power.

Ive been down this road and looked at every single option. If you want real bass you need a sub. First of all on the door speakers, make sure you have the crossover set correctly, second make sure you have dynamat and FAST rings installed. This makes a huge difference in door/ mid bass. The FAST rings ar $24 on amazon and this is really worth it, YUGE difference.

Now for sub. Bottom line is how much do you want to spend? You can get a stealth box for $650 with a JL10w3v3 . This sub is OK but you can get way more bang for your buck with other sub. If you really dont want to use up cargo space you will need to built or have built a box that will go in the standard sub location and take up minimal room. The caveat here is that small boxes don't sound as good and require more power . You can always get a pair of 10s or a standard box that takes up alot of room and then if you need to go on a trip or move something, you can simply remove it temporarily. Let me know if you have any questions about the installation, I have been tuning mine over the past year and I did it all myself. Find out how much you want to spend and that will determine your options.

Stereo Question

Hey guys, I know this is slightly off topic but I can't post a new thread yet...

for installing a new stereo, Would any of you know if the red circles in my pictures attached be the steering wheel controls? 2007 non jbl standard sr5.

I ask, because the red circles connected. The factory stereo pictured (female connector) is where the red circled male plug went. However, I do not have steering wheel controls on my steering wheel. so I am not sure if it is just there as a standard wiring type thing.

I am installing a new stereo and I can not figure out if I need to try and find an adaptor for this, or just leave it disconnected.

Can anyone enlighten me on the red circled connector?
