Battery Removal

Hello all,

I have a 2006 4 runner lmited and I just purchased a set of Xenon headlights. I am fairly confident that I can do the lights no problem, I am more worried about taking out the battery.

Is there a specific step process to taking it out? I know there is a cross brace on the top that needs to come out, there is a ground, and the positive and negative. I assume I remove the brace, then the ground, then does it matter for the positive or negative? Sorry for the newbie question, it has been years since I took out a car batter and I don't want to screw anything up. Thanks.

Nothing special, although just for safety you may want to wear glasses of some sort to protect your eyes, similar to what you'd do when jumping your truck or another car. Just take it out as normal, although it will probably re-set the programmed stations on your radio too.
Also may want to check the water level in your battery too, always a good idea while you're at it!

Remove the ground first, that way when you are swing your wrench to remove the bracket and you accidentally hit the positive terminal, nothing will happen

Disconnect the negative side first, then the positive side. Loosen and remove the battery hold down. Be careful not to touch the positive and negative post of the battery together with any metal object. Reinstall the battery in reverse order. Negative cable ALWAYS gets connected last. Don't over-tighten the battery hold down as you can damage the battery case. If you plug a Computer Memory Saver into the 12v outlet before disconnecting your battery you will not have to do things like reprogram the radio station buttons after you reconnect the battery.

u dont need to remove the battery, just take keys out and make sure everything is off, unless u have big hands that dont fit behind the driver side headlight, then looses up the bracket and remove it, then push the battery back till u have the room.

All you need to do is disconnect the Negative battery cable (this will end up screwing up the pre set radio stations, and the clock) then the positive so no shocks spark or anything. Then un screw the holder and there you go, its out! Just re install opposite! Negative battery cable always goes on last.

Batteries are all maintenance free anymore. If the water level is low it's probably time to replace the battery.


Also OP, you'll need to reinitialize the windows and moonroof after disconnecting the battery.
