Battery Tender for 4Runner?

Like I said, it works for my AGM, but also woks for regular 12v acid batteries. It has settings for both.

I just ordered the Noco Genius 10 unaware that none of Noco's chargers are on the list of Odyssey approved battery chargers despite it having a dedicated 12 V AGM mode. How's your experience been with it so far with the Odyssey battery? I have a Group 34 Odyssey as my starter battery and am going to be mounting a Battle Born Lithium battery in the trunk so thought this was a good charger to get to keep both of them happy.

Back before America splintered into nation states and became a totalitarian regime that forbade travel, I used to fly a lot and leave my 4Runner at DEN for 2-3 weeks at a time in all manner of weather condiitons. There is no good reason your battery should be drained after 3 weeks of not driving it.

This! I have left my car and bike untouched for a month and they crank right up. Something isn’t right if yours is dead after sitting only 3 weeks.

Thanks for this. I was having doubts whether to keep the charger or send it back. I think i'll end up just keeping it. I currently live in an apartment building that doesn't have a place to plug in a charger in the parking so would have been pulling out the batteries to charge them. From what I've read the concern with the Noco charger has more to do with its charging profile in case there is some low draw from the battery while it is charging so this wouldn't be an issue for me at least in the short term. I was considering a second Odyssey Group 34 as well but now may look to fit a lighter battleborn 50 or 100 AH instead. I've seen a rig recently which was running a 50 AH Lithium in the aux tray location. The heat didn't seem to bother the battery as the owner was removing it after the trip and putting it on a charge. I haven't decided whether to do that or just to put it in a box in the back but I love the lithium option for its weight..

I looked at lithium as well and I don't think the extra cost is worth it. I also think they are more sensitive to charging profile too. I really love the noco chargers for their durability and reliability and will keep buying them. for a dual battery setup, its up to how you want to use it. I use it to power some devices like my diesel heater when I use my RTT in winter, so I want it to always be there. I also want it as an extra starter battery just in case my main battery goes when I am camping out anytime since there usually aren't any other people for miles. especially in winter when its < 0 out.

Are you running a fridge? What sort of draw are you getting in the real world in terms of continuous run-time with the G34 Aux battery only? My routine usage is going to be for 2-3 day trips with most probably a portable solar charger (roof is going to be occupied with other stuff). But I also would like the flexibility of going out on a 8-10 day trip with a 50L fridge and enough juice to charge a laptop, phone, camera and possibly a drone. I like the 2 x Group 34 option for the ability to link the batteries up, whether that is to start a dead starter battery (in an emergency) or when running a winch. If I decide to mount the aux battery under the hood, I might just start off with a G34 AGM and then see if I need the extra run time from a lithium. 50 AH LT lithium batteries are probably a few months away as well.

no fridge as I don't have the static space to give up regularly and I prefer camping in cold weather and do not camp during the summer, so typically I use a cooler to keep my food/drinks from freezing. I usually run some phone charges, a small light in the tent, and a diesel heater in winter. I believe the heater draws 10 amps to start and warm up for maybe 5-10 min, then goes down to 1.5-2.5 amps regulated throughout the night. after 8-10 hrs of running the battery is around 12.4V, at which time I will run the car for 30-60 min to recharge. this is only running off the aux battery. I am considering solar as well, and have been for a while, but I would need to carry the panel in the back and set it up on the ground. my RTT takes up the whole rack so there is no room for mounting. I ran off just the primary for a while and it was the same results. I just like the extra safeguard since I am usually isolated.

From what I read they dont last as long or work as well with huge temp changes, as their primary purpose seems to be for RV batteries.

Yes definitely more sensitive to temperature extremes than AGM from what I have heard from those who are running them. ReLion and now Battle Born are beginning to make LT series which perform better in freezing temperatures but long term results will still take time to come out. I think if you are looking at 100-200 AH of auxiliary battery than that starts to look really attractive given the weight. I may play around with it in a box in the back of the truck.

It's worked great for me any time I've needed to charge my Odyssey, no issues

Really no need to over think this or reinvent the wheel. I put a Deltran quick connect on everything including the 4R, Kubota tractor, Boat, ATVs, Motorcycle, etc. I have a couple of duel banks charges, some singles and even an outside version that lives under the deck to charge the garden tractor and make it standard practice to plug everything in when I’m done with them.

Been doing this for many years without issue or drama.

Like with most things, the easier you make it the more likely it will be that you use it.

My pickup sits for months at a time, no charger. Cranks (and cranks and cranks until it finally starts) every time.
4runner often sits for a week or two and no problems. Normally it sits for 5 days continuously at work (OTR truck driver), sometimes Shanghaied and stay out longer.

consider me another satisfied user of the Deltran Battery Tender Plus (the AGM-compatible model). been using it for years on 2 Toyotas and a BMW with zero issues. that sucker most definitely saved the BMW's battery during lockdown months...

Finally got around to completing this little project. I've been popping the hood and using the Battery Tender's battery clamps but I really wanted to do something more streamlined. I designed and 3D printed a fitting for an XT60 plug that would fit in one of the grille diamonds of my 4Runner. Since the wire is an adequate gauge, the connector also doubles as a power point for my little Viair compressor.
