Hyped by the media perhaps because there is a huge, compacted population with families living in homes 30 feet apart or stacked against/on top of one another in a major corporate/government corridor. Such an “event” is infrequent and, bottom line, there is a bigger audience = $ for news real/created for that area. We don’t get much coverage where we live now and that is fine with me.
Speaking of population, I worked in Bethesda for a few years. First, I lived in Rockville in an 11 story apt. building, then moved to a home in a crowded Vienna, VA neighborhood. I’d sometimes be called to go into work at 2AM and there was still moderate to heavy traffic on the beltway during my 15 mile drive from VA. Often times it could take me an hour to travel a few miles during the day in sunny weather. The population density of MD is a little over 600 people per sq. mile, VA is about 200. Oh, D.C. is only about 10,000 people per square mile. I’m surprised we got along as well as we did. Where we live now the density is about 6. No more National Symphony, no more Smithsonian, much less "fine dining" and a lot less people like us. If us old farts actually get stuck and want to go somewhere, our nearest neighbors (fireman, deputy sheriff, retired EMT, etc.) can come cross country in their snowmobiles. :dancin:
