where in the valley? woodland hills (near me) isnt bad at all.. however i guess i would be paranoid if i were somewhere near north hills or east valley lol

who gives a crap. we don't smog, we don't do state inspections. I haven't seen any cops crawling under cars checking for cats around here lately. I also run non DOT tires on my motorcycle and illegal tint on my wife's car. There are so many dumb uninforced regulations I don't care to jump through hoops for.

Same thing happened to my son's '99 parked in his Community College parking lot during school. Campus police told him he was the 32nd stolen Cat this school year!

Went thru our insurance and had OEM Toyota replacement done, $1800 plus some custom welding due to aftermarket Magnaflow muffler.

Soon after the new one was on, we purchased and installed a CatClamp - a deterrent not a guarantee, I know.

Can I ask who you have insurance with? My cat was just stolen and my insurance (State Farm) would NOT replace it with an OEM Toyota part. They would only pay for the NAPA brand. They said "it's in your contaract."

I told them to write in my contract that "DudeMan is looking for a new insurance company."

Luckily out here in AZ it has slowed down a lot. Last year around this time we had quite a few stolen. Recently this year around the gas price hike we had claims for Drilled gas tanks

State Farm is one of the WORST insurance companies PERIOD when it comes to using Non-OEM parts on a vehicle. When it comes to mechanical parts, they don't care how new the car is, if it's available, they require you to use it. They don't use any aftermarket sheetmetal - but they insist on using USED parts even on brand new cars. You could have had a Magnaflo high-flow cat installed for WAAAAY less than 1800 bucks.

If you want only OEM parts, check into Nationwide, I had heard rumors they were going to be offering an OEM Only policy, so that no matter the age of your vehicle, if OEM Parts are still available they would replace them with OEM. There is also a company called CHARTIS, they offer OEM only policies, but be prepared to pay. A LOT! And it takes forever to get a claim settled when you do have one. But you will get only OEM parts.
The only downside to using only OEM parts on a vehicle of our "vintage" is that you can very easily get into a Total-Loss situation in a typical front end collision.
