Before you get a flat tire.....

I took out the tool kit to remove the spare tire and all the Jam nuts were painted on. I couldn't loosen them with my hand. I had to use a screw driver to break them free.
Just a word to the wise that you should loosen them now before you get a flat and can loosen the nuts.

Road Hazard Warranty

You just reminded me of something... most tires on a new vehicle are protected by manufactur warranty against defects but are NOT protected against road hazards.

I found out the hard way when I hit a pothole when I had an Integra and blew out the sidewall. I found that Discount Tire happily provided road hazard warranty for $20/ wheel or $80 all around. (not sure if the spare is included or not)

the only reason I checked mine was because the tire pressure light was blinking as I was leaving the dealers lot. When I got home I let it sit for a while then I checked the 4 tires. Found one was real low so I took care of it and figured the light would go out. We went out that night and I noticed the light was still on and I remembered the manual said to check the spare also so that is what I did this morning and it was over inflated. The one I inflated yesterday was low again so I took care of it. The light is now off but I'm now concerened about that one tire that might have a leak. I will definitely check it tomorrow and if its leaking then its going back to the dealer.

Tire Pressure Monitoring System

Does anybody know what kind of system is in the 2004 4Runners? I had heard that Toyota was using the cheaper (and less reliable) systems that monitor differences in tire rotation. Since the manual says to also check the spare when the warning light comes on, I'm assuming it's a direct system that monitors pressure individually in each tire. Can anybody confirm?

The 4Runner tire pressure warning system uses pressure sensors in each tire which transmit to the vehicle via radio. [The senders are digitally coded, so that you don't pick up another vehicle's sensors. If you change wheels or sensors (in the valve stem, I think), the digital ID of the new sensor has to be "registered" with your vehicle.]

The system doesn't work by detecting the actual pressure value, it works by detecting a difference in pressure between one or more tires and the rest.

I don't believe that the system uses the rotation-difference method, although differences in tire size (and thus rotation difference) will mess up your Vehicle Skid Control (VSC) system.
