Being an all service shop we see some interesting stuff..

This didn't come into a shop, at least not mine, but I'm still getting a kick out of it. Thread is titled "helpp".

These are scraping and making the truck jump when i hit the gas. Also making squeaking noise that i believe are the u joints

I just can't imagine what his problem might be.

Looks like my 350z underneath and it looks like they forgot to install the cones on the ball joints when they replaced them.
Yup that's exactly it. ....he melted the other ones torching the ball joints out, which weren't even bad. So he didn't put them back in, brought it to us for an alignment and we told him that he was missing the cones. So he drives over an hour to the infiniti dealer, buys 2 cones and brings them in. But there are two different cones and he just got 1 of each.....

Holy :tape2:

Reminds me of an old boss of mine- we spent a lot of time wrenching on various mechanical contraptions. His favorite saying: "Folks, its alllllllllllllll about proper alignment."

One should know when installing a high end lift kit as such you need to drill your own leaf spring centering hole for accuracy.

It ain't the springs, they're fine. He lost the front ujoint on the driveshaft, pole vaulted the truck, and spun the diff housing on the axle tubes. Now he's got a new driveshaft and he's wondering why it doesn't line up like it did.

I was commenting on the cheap lift blocks that allowed the axle housing to spin in the first place. If the pin on the top of the axle housing was in the alignment hole on the steel leafs it probably wouldn't have done that.

One of us is confused, I'm pretty sure it's you :D. The Ford 9.75" axle is not a one piece assembly like a Toyota 8", the axle tubes are fixed to the diff housing but they aren't the same piece. What happened here is not the entire axle assembly rotating in respect to the leaf springs - the leaf spring perches wouldn't let it do that. What happened is the center section/diff housing rotated in respect to the axle tubes. The leaf spring perches and centering pins are still intact on the tubes.

Those lift blocks are factory by the way, and had nothing to do with this guy's issue. Even if they didn't have centering pins (they do), the welds on the leaf spring perch or the u-bolts themselves would have to break before the axle tube could rotate relative to the spring pack.

OK wow! I was thinking Ford (I have a 90 Bronco). I did assume the whole assembly moved. I did not think the diff housing could move independently of the tubes even in the 9.75. Looking back I originally had an 8.8. It has been a long time since I had the stock axle in it. I replaced it with a 1 ton 14 bolt a long time ago.

Plug welds, I think. That's what it looks like on mine, anyway.

Airing it up and boom....later found out customer dropped the wheel before they brought them to us.

yup. seen this a few times. mostly on 8.8's

yup. its a strange way to do things. technically, the only thing that holds it is the press fit. sometimes they don't have any weld in the holes.

Shit dude, hope no one was standing near that when it went... that's the kind of BS that'll ruin your day.

Forgot to get pics of the broken yoke and u joint that snapped in half when the diff locked up.

good old 10 bolt.

I need to start snapping more pics of this type of thing. I see it often here, just never have a camera handy. nor think about taking a crappy phone pic.

I did get this though, I while back.

customer came in complaining that the vehicle wasn't driving well, swerving all over the road etc..

the lug nuts were at least 1/8" longer than the wheel was thick. they tightened down against the hub, before they ever hit the wheel...

scary...
