Best A/T tire for highway & mileage

Ok,
I’m sure this has been discussed a bunch in here, but I can’t find a specific thread with this topic. I am looking for an all-terrain off-road tire, that will also have very good highway, road, and wet weather manners. I would prefer something that I can get about 50,000 + miles out of. I would say 85% of my driving is all highway, with some light/occasional sandy beach, camping, or trail riding. I will do a little more off road from time to time, but not too much. I will be upgrading to 285s from my stock 265’s.

Tires I’m considering:
Falken Wildpeak AT
Nitro Ridge Grappler
BFG’ KO2
Any other ones I should look at, for the record I almost have 30,000 miles, and my truck is about a year and a half old. So I definitely put some mileage on it. Thanks in advance, looking forward to everyone’s feedback.

I can only give you my experience. I've got K02's on four vehicles - 2 4Runners and 2 Tacomas - and they always last me 50k+ in mileage. They're relatively quiet too. I'll never buy anything else for my trucks. I'm sure there are lots of other good tires out there too.

I just put on 285 KO2 ( C range) yesterday on my truck. I’m super happy with them. Not only they look very good on the truck but they are super quiet. I would dare to say they’re close (noise wise) to the oem Grandtreks.

I would consider a KO2 in C load. Keep the weight down. Or Wildpeaks in a SL rating. In a 285 they both weigh the same. 51 lbs. KO2’s are a little quieter from experience with both. Most people say the Wildpeaks are better in wet. Both have the 3peak rating.

I will only add that Wildpeak last a lot longer in LT than they do in SL.

OP, take a look at the new Toyo Open Country AT III as well.

I am not personally a fan of KO2 but it is a great desert tire and a sound choice. At the end, tires are like shoes, lots of subjectivity is normal.

After months of analysis paralysis, I'm running these in LT 265/70R17 E.

I had KO2's on another SUV. They are a great desert tire, but their wet traction was lacking, just like every version of the BFG A/T I've had since the 80's.

The Falken Wildpeak seems to have frequent uniformity issues. A friend who is a GM at a national tire chain, has stated that they are close to discontinuing carrying the Falken Wildpeak A/T3W's, due to way too many comebacks.

The Toyo A/T3 looked decent, and they are a supposed improvement particularly in wet traction over the Toyo A/T2's I had on my 3rd gen. But I got a ride in a 4Runner that the owner had just had these installed. They were fairly noisy. Not M/T noisy, but I knew it would bug me.

I wanted a tougher tire than the OEM Dunlops. Good wet and snow traction, reasonably quiet, and smooth riding. The Yokohama's haven't disappointed me. No vibration at any speed. If they are louder than the OEM tires, I can't tell. At proper inflation pressure, they are only slightly firmer than the OEM Dunlop's. They do great in rain, and the snow.

I was expecting a drop in MPG due to the heavier tire, and grippy rubber compound, but I haven't been able to verify a loss in MPG. I assume it is worse, common sense says it has to be. But any change in MPG has been slight.

They aren't the most aggressive looking tires. But I've done that in the past, and just wanted a tire that performed for my needs.

Those do look good. The Cooper Discoverer AT3 4S is also a great tire, especially for the money.

Likewise, we just swapped KO2’s for them cause the Bfg’s were getting super loud as they wore down. We’ve never particularly been impressed with KO’s/KO2’s though.

These new Cooper at’s have been fantastic so far.

As beefy as this tire is, it is astoundingly quiet!

No highway drone, very mild if any and that is drowned out by a radio in low volume.

I had to go with the E load as I have yet to find a C Load AT tire in my profile (285/65/18), about a 1-2 MPG hit with my combo, but I love these things.

I'll be happy if I get 45k out of these and my expectation is I probably will and some.

these will get louder around 3k miles and significantly louder as they wear over 7k miles. I do think 45k is a reasonable expectation--i have almost 20k miles on my set and they have a good bit of tread left. That said, ill probably swap them out for something else in the next 5-10k

I've had Yoko G015 on my lifted Outback, drove like OEM tires in terms of noise, didn't lose much if any mpg even it was a larger tire, it went everywhere I wanted it to go, and it was very very good in the snow, didn't get stuck anywhere.

I had about 75k km or 46k miles in 16 months, they wore OK, didn't get noisy as time went on like KO2's I've had before, I really like them.

Also going to try the Yoko X-AT on my truck later this month as I've heard people who really liked them.

I have C-load KO2's. Looks like I will get about 40k out of them. Pretty loud too right now. Were great at first. Not sure if E load for some reason would get better mileage. Probably will try something else next time.

Consider weight....my .02c

Take a look at the spreadsheet I put together on the post below. I have listed various tire sizes and their weights. I settled on the Firestone Destination A/T2 @ P285/70r17 and couldn't be happier. Highway manners are excellent and no issues with balance. I have done a little off roading but nothing that would challenge the tire.

Hello, I am currently running a set of the Falken Wildpeak at3w's 275/70/17 on my 2012 sr5 and I've had them on for a few months now including off roading and a few short road trips (around 120 miles each way). So far I really like the tires and they make minimal road noise. As for mileage I am getting roughly 15.5mpg, down from my stock tires I was getting 17.5-18mpg. Off-road they do the job very well in combination with the A-TRAC system.
