best bang for the buck

Was wondering what would be the best motor swap to do in my 87? It has a fresh factory rebuilt 22re in there now but i am running 33 1050 15 km2s with a rear locker with 4.10 gears, and in high four does not really want to turn my tires in thick mud have to put in low four and just cant turn my tires fast enough in low range to clean out. A friend of mine has a 94 tacoma 4cyl and has a complete turbo kit and stand alone fuel system i can purchase for 1500.00. His truck runs a 8.0 in the 1/8 mile all day long on street tires. but my concern is i dont really want to run high rpms to build boost. thanks for any advice.

Bang for the buck...V-8...check out the 1 ton build here in the forums, it's got bang in the form of a slegehammer

the best bang for your buck is to put smaller tires on it, or just put new ring and pinions in it. 33x10.50 are huge tires for something built to run 225/75r15's with 4.10's from the factory. regearing would probably be the cheapest way to go.

Now that's a good answer.
4.88's would be a good ratio for 33" tires.
You'd get the lost power and mpg back.

Sorry, wasn't trying to point someone in the wrong direction...I assumed the question was "What motor swap...", not "what would be the best way to spin the tires, or what gears would be best..."
There's no replacement for displacement, and no substitute for cubic inches!
1500 bucks will get you well on your way to slinging mud as high as you would like...no turbo lag involved.

gears

I have considered gears but would it really make that much difference. Most people i know have gone to 5.29s. would i still be able to use my locker in the rear if i switched my gears. been trying to find a set with locker for the front but kinda hard to find the 7.5" for the ifs in something i want.

I think I've seen guys running 5.29s and Detroit lockers in their 7.5 Toyotas.

I will say that 33's are about the biggest I'd go with IFS, and locking those bad boys up is probably going to give you an education in CV changing you may not appreciate. If you wanna run big tires and a locker, a solid axle is probably your better bet.

Either way, gears make a huge difference.

I have 35s on an open front end and have had very good luck keeping cvs.

Not ideal but gets the job done.

Sure, but there's something to be said for the skill of the driver, too. Not to say it can't be done, just that the stresses of the larger tires, gears, and locked drivetrain are going to add up.

well everything in my runner is new toyota parts. i mean every seal to bearing to oil filter. i rebuilt the engine and trans put in new toyota clutch fly wheel pressure plate and bearings in trans. i mean the 33s are tall but no wide they are only 10.50 on an 8" wheel.i will prolly go with the yukon gears and a detriot locker in front and i know before anyone says it..... i am running a cheap loc rite in the rear i have had it for about 3 yrs and runs good. thanks for all the good info
