Don't have my '18 yet. Shopping for mobile ham radios and want to see if somehow could take a measurement of the lower center dash pocket, the wider one below the usb and power outlet.

How wide and tall is the opening? Thanks!

Approx 6 1/4" x 1 3/4" at the mouth, but be advised, the pocket "tapers" to a smaller area as it goes back.

Sure thing. If you are looking to mount a faceplate in there, it will work nicely. I shoehorned a whole radio in there but had to chop out chunks of the heater ducts behind the dash. It was ugly. I don't recommend it.

Having seen how large most radio bodies are, I would agree not to try to cram a whole radio in there on account of lots of needed trimming and heat buildup concerns. Mount the unit under your seat (or similar out-of-the-way location) with a speaker or two and you'll be much happier.

i have an Icon IC-2730 (incidentally used to be Meefzah's), and the faceplate fits perfectly with just a press-fit into that opening and stays put. It doesn't sound super robust, but it never moves unless I want it to. It also blends in really well with the rest of the dash. No trimming needed unless you really want to hide the faceplate cable (you can see it in the photo)

From my driver seat, the only thing I can't see easily is which channel is active, but it's rarely a problem (I've only accidentally spammed the WIN system with casual simplex banter once...). I overall love the radio if you just need a solid dual bander for comms and not all of the extra bits and bobs coming on flaghsip mobile rigs.

Ha! I wondered if you ever bought the cable and installed that thing. Hope it is working out well for you. I made it about 2 months before I bought another IC-2730, LOL... what a great unit... serves as my HAM, wx center, FD radio, and scanner...

I definitely can't complain. Ended up just crimping a new connector onto the existing cable and it's worked perfectly. If you don't need bells and whistles it's a fantastic radio. Only thing I need is a good way to mount the mic clip to the center tunnel without drilling rivet holes (open to suggestions). I'd like to have that cupholder back eventually haha

Seriously, holes are insignificant - if you remove the item later, plug them with black nylon hole plugs and it looks just fine. Last vehicle I traded in was my Taco, and I plugged the visible holes with hole plugs... actually used electrical tape over a couple that were in blank switch panels... dealer didn't even notice when he took possession of the truck.

If you don't remove the item, then it's a non-issue, because the holes allow you to use it correctly and reclaim your cup holder.

He bought it used from me, and it didn't. I replaced that "hanger " style with a Motorola style mic clip / button (visible in his pic, above).

Thanks for the picture! The IC-2730 is the radio I just bought and I'm really happy to see the faceplate fits perfectly in that spot. Trying to do the least invasive install I can with it being a new rig.

Another question for the experts out there. Were there any changes to the center console for 2017 besides the carbon fiber look on the TRDs?

I'm looking into buying a Proclip mount 834492 and their website only lists it for '10-'16. Talked to someone from Proclip today to see if that was true. He said it wasn't listed on the site because Toyota changed the console. I'm skeptical of that based on pictures I've seen of a '16 and a '17. Anyone think that might be true?

I am seeing pictures of the mic plugged into the faceplate and the radio unit's "brains". Are both an option or just one?

Sounds like a great dealer to sell stuff to haha. I still like keeping the inside all clean-like. I have an idea for a fabbed-up bracket that wedges into the trim (kinda like the proclip, but less bulky), I just haven't had time to try and make it yet.

Looking over the website, the "A" designates the model version, and it is the latest version (old one was an IC-2730H it seems). Mine is an IC-2730A.

The radio consists of the faceplate, a radio box, and a handset, all connected by either a cat6 or RJ45 cable. The handset can be remoted from either the base or the faceplate, depending on which fits your installation better. The radio box on mine is under the driver seat, velcro'd to the carpet on in front of the rear A/C vent, so the mic still reaches fine to myself or the passenger without having to come out of the faceplate (which is an awkward plug location IMO). I definitely recommend a new speaker as well. I put an MFJ cleartone right next to it and it's a night and day difference vs. the built in speaker.

I rarely have a drink in that cupholder (on account of it being used as a mic holder), but I imagine at least the left portion would be blocked depending on the size of beverage. There is not much getting around that, though, unless you mount it somewhere much more accessible (on a ram mount, etc.)

i can still get to my radio with a drink in the cupholder, it just makes it a little tougher

i set the function keys on the mic to do what i need, so i generally don't need to actually mess with the radio though

I dont dip but has anyboody come up with something else to do with this small opening next to the USB input?

IDK if you found anything yet, but if you carry a small wallet it works for that. I shove mine in there for longer trips where I don't want to bother with it in my pocket.

Contemplating a custom panel with some switches or maybe a 110V outlet in the future.
