Best place to buy Cats

Well, I've changed both sensors (A/F before the Cats/O2 Sensor after the Cats) and the two codes went away for about two weeks. Now they are both back, the Auto parts store said the Cats are bad which makes sense since I just replaced both the sensors.

My questions are:
1. Are the Cats bad? I've noticed no bad smell coming from the exhaust.
2. If so, where is the best place to buy them. I look at Advance website and they have some for my truck as low as $129.

Any advice on this?

You can get a 2.5" magnaflow high flow cat for a $109. Cut the old one out, weld the new one in, and free up some exhaust flow at the same time.

I think I have two, one up forward and one in the rear. I'm looking for direct fit ones so my CEL will clear and stay off. I think Rockauto.com has some good prices for some that I can bolt on myself.

Unless someone has a better alternative.
Thoughts?

Check Amazon, they have great prices. My 99 only has 1 cat, I bought my 2.5" hi-flow from LCE for a little more because I like to call them up & talk Headers/HP & shlt.:reddance:

I went through this (cat replacement) last month,ended up going to Pep Boys. They always have discounts for online orders (which I then opt for store pickup), they currently have one for 35% off. The code is "35forall". It may come out cheaper than Rock Auto after shipping costs.

There is one additional gasket they don't sell,part 31374. I bought it an an AutoZone or Advanced Auto Parts,practically any parts store carries Walker so just ask for that part number.

If you can weld,they also sell the 93271 and 93252 universal converters. It'll save you a decent chunk of change over the direct bolt-ins.

I'll second checking for online coupons though. Advance often has a 30-40% off code for online sales, then you can just select pickup in store and it's no different than getting it off at the register.

Pep Boys might just be the place, $332 (with discount) and RockAuto is about $380 for the same Walker brand. I like the fact that I can pick them up in the store vice paying for shipping.

I had a code for P0420 - catalyst efficiency,was hoping it was just the rear sensor but after monitoring the signal with a scan tool it was indicative of a bad cat. No sulfur smell either. When I removed the first cat a few small pieces of core fell out.

I cleared the code before installing everything and hasn't surfaced ever since,I've put at least 1500 miles.

If you do go with those Walker direct replacements,you will need new nuts and bolts for the connection between the two cats and the one between the read cat and remaining exhaust. They'll be larger than the factory hardware,I grabbed some from a hardware store. I was able to reuse the original nuts at the manifold-cat connection.

I bought a ton of stuff from Rockauto over the years and had no problems with their products and service. But, I became an ex-customer when they shipped me a wrong part and then deducted the return shipping from my refund. When I called to protest that it was 100% their mistake and it was unethical to charge me for return shipping I got nowhere. So, hope they have a happy time with the last ten bucks they'll ever get from me.

Yes rust,that 4-letter word. I didn't even try unbolting the the OEM hardware at the cat and muffler flanges,they were just nubs of rust.

Good to know, I should be good to go. My truck spend it's like in FL so I haven't had an issue getting any nuts to break loose. I might have someone install for me though just in case.

I hate to bring up this post, but started to order my two CATs when I took a look under the truck and don't think I have two. I've included some pics of what maybe a CAT, then a pic of what I know is a CAT, then a pic of my emissions sticker under the hood.

Can someone tell me how many CATs I have and if I have a Cali truck or not?
