best shocks for street and highway ride

I keep seeing threads that are comprimise street/off road or off road only. I dont run anything technical and need the room in the runner on holidays for road trips.... so leaing towards highway..anyone shock ride like a caddy?

Dont worry, the shocks go underneath the vehicle, not inside. You'll be fine.

Thanks for the advice. I'll keep'em outside. I'll check out OME. For cornering not to suffer I was thinking of urethane antisway bushings.

I am interested in the same thing. Has anyone tried these shocks and can give us a review of them? I bought a 2008 SR5 stock with some decent options. It has 17" Dunlop Dratreks (sp?). While looking, I drove another 2008 that seemed to ride more comfortable than the one I have. It only has 33,000 miles, so I am assuming the shocks are good. Looking for a comfortable ride, I really don't do any off roading.

2nd question:
I would like to add a little lift to the rig for looks. I like the rake and would like to stay close to the stock rake with the lift. Everything seems to lift the front more than the rear. Almost like reversing the Toytek 2.5/1.5? Any options that would not affect my 1st priority of comfort?

3rd question:
Would the 1.5" wheel spacer have any affect on the ride by making the stance a little wider?

KYB is not a "good" solution

I recently purchased a 2002 Limited with only 86k. No rear sag but lots of nose dive on stops. I work for an after-market distributor and was able to obtain KYB's pretty cheap. I am very disappointed with the ride and handling. The nose dive is much better but the overall ride is not much better than my 84 Jeep CJ --- and that ain't saying much. I am on the fence about doing one of the following: 1-waiting and saving up for OME set up 2- replacing springs(w/ stock srpings) and see that dose with KYB's 3- putting on Bilsteins with current set up or 4- replacing springs and go with Bilsteins.

Any feedback is much appreciated.

Just get new stock suspension. The stock suspension is very comfortable, and cheaper than OME or any other lift shocks. Unless you definitely want a lift, or need ro carry extra weight, just go with stock replacment. Sonoran Steel has a stock set for the 99, which was the tallest year (1 inch taller than the 2000's).

I was going to say that. I went to Monroes for around town and after a year back to stock. The Monroes seemed to harsh on uneven pavement

Been there, done that. I yanked them off at about that 500 mile mark. They were so soft that if you hit any dips while cornering it felt like it was going to roll.

I swapped out for Bilsteins. I love the Bilsteins. They handle great on twisty mountain roads. I have had the HDs and 5125. Both great.

So the 99's are an inch taller than the 98's? So would these work good with the EMU 3 inch lift? I really dont need new shocks but if im doing the lift I might as well. And I dont off road.

I'm a big fan of the Bilstein HD's too but I can only compare them to the worn to hell stickers they replaced on both my 4Runners.

Finally someone elso on here with KYBs! Are you running the KYB gas shocks? Thats what Ive been running for 15000 miles and Ive been constantly looking for someone else that has them. Pretty harsh ride huh isnt it

Nelson, how do you think the stock shocks would work with my performance products coils? They give me about 1 1/2in lift, and they are progressive coils. Or better yet, what about the trekmasters - are they stiffer than the stock tokico's? My KYBs are too harsh

I saw a really nice picture once showing springs from each year and their lengths, but I can't find it now. The 99's were the tallest, and the 2000's the lowest. The difference between those 2 was about 1 inch. I believe 98's were just a hair shorter then the 99's.

No, no stock shocks will work with an OME 3" lift spring (unless perhaps you went with a stock landcruiser shock, but I don't think they would be a good match to the OME 3" lift). If you lift, then you need new shocks as you'l max out you stock shocks.

What do you want to get out of it in terms of comfort? If you don't off-road, then I would say think hard about whether you really need a lift, because you are pretty much guaranteed that a lift will make your ride less comfortable both because of the stiffness of the springs and shocks, and because of the geometry change. The stock setup is quite comfortable.

I think the trekmasters are the stock shock. Other guys here would know better, but my gut says that 1.5 inches is too much for the stock shock. I am sure you could find a longer trekmaster, like for the landcruiser, which might be a good choice, but I don;t really know since I have never tried those springs.

I replaced my stock shocks on my 97 sr5 4x4 two years ago with bilsteins and I love the ride. I've had bilsteins on a 2002 z71 suburban and a 94 vet, big improvement over stock. I can't comment on ome but I keep hearing lots of good things about them.

kyb's, I had them on a 87 vet for a few months, imo, they were just cheap shocks, 1/4th the cost of bilsteins but you get what you pay for....don't flame me, that's just my experience with them.

I wont flame you. But mine definately werent cheap. They were on sale for $50 each. I think the list price was like $75 each. Mine seem to be a good quality shock, just too stiff without any weight in my runner

Oh ya. If theyre too stiff for my truck with coils that give a 1 1/2in lift then they will eat up the stock coils. Your runner probably has a terrible case of the "jitters", a syndrome which I affectionatey named my runner after
