Best speculation of a 2023 6th generation I have seen

Interesting and unfortunate observation I didn't see before on the GX550 and LC250. The rear wing is huge. And it moves with the glass. Meaning you can't open either the door or the window on either vehicle with something long on the roof rack. I don't know how that ever got passed the first design stage. What a poor choice. I really hope the 4Runner version keeps the roll down rear window. The flip up glass application is poorly executed.

I can't imagine a 4Runner still built in Japan will be as bad as the Tundra has been. The 5th gen 4R is outstanding for panel gap and quality of materials. My long highway drives would be so much better in a Tundra.

Isn't it a big assumption at this point that the 4Runner will still be built in Tahara?

I really think it's going to end up in Mexico with the Tacoma. But maybe I'll be proven wrong.

That is pretty nice and I think looks a bit better than the 5th gen. Just has enough of the LC250 in it. They should have made that pic in heritage blue.

Pretty scary reading the issues over on the Tundra forums though. Lots of computer and electrical issues aside from the engines seizing. Hopefully the 4R doesn't have that many issues.

I like that one too. It still feels very 4Runner to me. The rear quarter area and rear side glass looks to me like it was lifted directly from the Bronco Sport. And I suspect it was used to make the image. It's something I would want in my driveway.

I agree, it makes the most sense for them to build it in Mexico. Everything I hear says the plant in Mexico is at capacity. These are the Youtubers like Kirk and David Chao and I remember other moves like the Tacoma to Mexico fully was announced way ahead of time.

I haven't paid much attention to capacity talk (and honestly, Toyota probably guards that information pretty well), but that probably is the one reason it could stay in Tahara. In theory they'd have about a 100K vehicle a year hole at least if they moved 4Runner production out of that site. Maybe some of that would be backfilled by increased Prado/LC250/GX550 production.

Other question becomes if Mexico is out of floor space or existing line capacity also. Slightly different problems to have.

I would find it hard to believe Mexico is maxxed out and Tahara is not, but maybe that's possible? How many vehicles are made at Tahara? Are all international Prado's made there, along with all current 4Runners and all GX's? Anything else? I suppose everything is going to be on TNGA-F, so maybe it does make more sense to do it that way. And maybe the new 4Runner will be extremely similar to the LC250, simplifying production at Tahara. I suppose it should logically share a bit more with the LC250 the Tacoma, might even use the exact same frame and wheelbase with no modifications.

Retaining Japanese production and not blowing out the price would be a big incentive for me to buy a 6th gen in 2028 or so.

My memory is that Tahara production capacity is about 350k units per year. Of those about half are 4Runners. Total Land Cruiser sales globally including Prado, 70, and 300 are under 400k. The 4Runner is roughly 1/3 of the total mix. The LC70 is manufactured separately. I don't have any data to support this - but I'm not sure Toyota has enough sales to keep the Tahara factory running full capacity without 4Runner unless it introduces another model to take up the production volume lost.

Based on the Aussie YT videos I have watched it sounds like the 70 and 300 have long wait times so it sounds like they could use the extra capacity.

I am guessing interior pic of the 4r tomorrow :spy:

I'm surprised they didn't start the reveal tomorrow as it's 4-4-24 but I'll be surprised if there's no 4R pic tomorrow. There has usually been 5-6 before reveal which lines up with that date in May people are talking about.

The LC250 having premium fuel requirement has me wondering if the Taco TRD Pro hybrid will be the same and upcoming hybrid 4R.

I think the target I've read for reveal is overland expo west in early May. Not sure if that is any more than a random rumor someone made up. But I also expect Toyota to meter out teasers for about 2 months and then a reveal with very little info. And then slowly trickle out details for a year.

Remember when they would reveal the new product and it would be on dealer lots in a month and instead of endless influencer fluff pieces you could just go look at one yourself? Those were the days.

If I had to put money on a concept that turns out to be closest to the eventual production model, it's this one (view on YouTube).

Kind of torn on the styling. It's not bad but it looks like it's trying too hard. And I would miss the differentiation between the 4runner and everything else in the line up.

Alternatively the 6th gen could end up looking like a scaled down Sequoia.

Either way, expect to wait forever and pay minimum 10% over MSRP! I'm keeping my 2015 TEP!

sales rep at a local dealership said it's gonna look like the 2024 Tacoma, referring to front end treatment, interior, dash. turbo four-banger. So, tracking with this.

yeah I am betting it is going to be pretty anticlimactic. Exact carry over of tacoma powertrain and options.

Initially I was suspect of the base engine carrying over from the taco but that might be ok for the 2runner. I guess the only excitement will be if they offer the 6MT.

I think there is a 99% chance you are correct, looking at the LC250 dimensions, it would seem likely the 6th gen 4Runner will be within an inch or two of those dimensions. It would be so much more cost effective to have one rolling chassis in the factory and just drop an LC or 4R body on it, greatly reducing production costs.

Some have hoped for a smaller 4Runner, but that rules out the third row. I think the LC baby FJ will scratch the small itch.

My Plano source told me it will be the Overland Expo, they left it to us to guess which one. Based on the recent teaser photo, May seems logical.

We shouldn't have long to wait now, I have it on good authority that the 6th gen 4Runner will be introduced at the Overland Expo this year, now we just have to figure out which month, my guess is May.

Overland Expo
West - May 17-19, 2024 - Ft. Tuthill County Park - Flagstaff, AZ
PNW - June 28-30, 2024 - Deschutes County Expo Center - Redmond, OR
Mtn West - August 23-25, 2024 - The Ranch - Loveland, CO
East - October 4-6, 2024 - Oak Ridge Estates - Arrington, Virginia

Yes, there do seem to be a few (and I do mean a few) people who really care about the cramped 3rd row in the 4Runner. The LC250 does not appear like it will ever offer a third row thanks to the hybrid battery. The 4Runner is positioned below the LC250. That makes me think that the third row option would go away for the new gen. It's already only available in select trims. Toyota could decide that body on frame 3-row SUVs means only Sequoia and GX550 to them. Or maybe the 4Runner will get the option again.

I do hope the 4Runner is not just identically bodied to the LC250. I totally get it that it probably needs to have the same wheelbase. But shaving a couple inches off each overhang would be a huge plus to me. When I saw the LC250 in person, I really liked it, except for the overhangs. I would hope Toyota would realize that buyers will be annoyed if the 6th gen is less capable offroad than the 5th gen.

If the 4Runner isn't different enough to the LC250... then what's the point? Other than having it literally be a decontented LC250 with one or two different badges.

I test drove a couple of Broncos today with the 2.7 in them. The heritage edition seems to be the sweet spot for the same price as a TRD Pro, the power was very impressive. Front/rear locker, 4 auto mode, 6 aux switches, 12 inch screen and all the removable stuff! But the reliability of a 3rd gen Tundra lol.

A friend of some guy on Reddit supposedly snapped this in Moab. That original poster wonders whether this could be the new 4Runner.
