Best speculation of a 2023 6th generation I have seen

There's a few things missing in the render that I think are must-have design elements and I'm surprised to see them left out on so many renders. First is the front clip - it has to retain some version of the 4Runner grill polygon shape. And it needs to retain the signature chunky forward sloping C pillar style with a rear panel window between the C pillar and D pillar. Those two features IMO are absolutes that Toyota wouldn't leave off. On a Land Cruiser model you can drop the C pillar style point because it's not a vehicle defining feature like it is on the 4R.

Toyota can list all the excuses about EVs it wants but the fact of the matter is that when everybody was laughing at Tesla, Toyota was also betting on hybrids which is even worse because in addition to ignoring EV, they also went the wrong way.

I won't be surprised if Jetboy is right and Toyota is late because it cannot get the hybrid to do much in a truck other than inflate the price.

Let's see what the Tacoma is like.

But if I am to pay north of 50k for anything, it better either be a good old V8 or a full EV. No hybrids, no excessive complexity, no half-baked solutions for me at that kind of price point.

To me, regardless of the hybrid solution, if I move away from ICE, it is way better than the limited range of an EV when you live or drive anywhere away from home or a metropolis.

I'm not counting there will be Toyota chargers in the wild like Jeep is teasing they promise to install (in a very limited number of places).

Oh I don't disagree when it comes to a 4R replacement in the near term. I have my eyes set a bit further down the road.

I can talk all the crap I want but, yeah, if my 4R were to be totaled today, I would find myself in a very bad spot and probably just buy a Toyota anyway simply because I offroad solo and dependability in the wild is #1 thing for me.

I was hoping for a nicer interior. Very sick of the lazy design of slapping a huge $10 display in your field of vision.

Thanks for the link, appreciated. The available off-road features and extended front travel vs the 4R (I think it is quite a bit more even now) do catch my attention. Kinda getting tired of dealing with aftermarket stuff (other than shocks) especially at the current prices.

Pricing and mpg will be interesting to see down the road as well as how the cabin feels in person. And, of course, any 1st year teething issues.

Can you link me to a source on this? We have a Rav4, live in Colorado, and I haven't seen anything about it.

Google "cablegate", there was a class action lawsuit in Canada where Toyota eventually conceded and covered the replacement after years of customers paying $7000 for the cable replacement. Toyota cut a drainage notch in the connection cover on 2022-23 models and won't honour the replacement settlement on these models because it's a "different" design. It all stems from the connector being plugged in upside down and catching water and salt. The previous gen had the plug the other way and had no corrosion issues.

The new Tacoma is looking very very very good! The TRD Off-Road in particular. Disconnecting sway bar, remote reservoir bilsteins, 1700lbs of payload, 33" tires, rear locking differential and if you opt for the iForce Max, a 2400w inverter.

New for the Tacoma is a full-time 4WD system when opting for the Limited Hybrid max trim. Nice to see.

270hp with a 3rd pedal is really great for those who want a stick.

Continuing to offer the access cab and a 6 foot bed is huge. From what I understand, only the Nissan Frontier and Toyota Tacoma still allow you to get a small cab or a 6 foot bed.

After the disappointing Tundra and Sequoia reveals, I kept my expectations low for the Tacoma but this has completely exceeded anything I would have expected from Toyota!

Toyota's press release for the 2024 Tacoma: 2024 Toyota Tacoma

It looks like they knocked it out of the park. I would expect these powertrains (or at least one of them) to end up in the next-gen 4Runner.

I particularly find the following cool about the new Tacoma:
2.4L turbo, with OPTIONAL hybridization. I appreciate giving people the choice, not forcing it.
8-speed automatic (and 6-speed manual!). I appreciate not going to a 10-speed in a rugged offroad truck.
Leaf spring OR coil-spring rear suspension. Bizarre that they're offering it both ways!!
They did not abandon 2-door variants like Ford and Chevy just did. They replaced the "access cab" (which had rear seats) with an XtraCab, which is a 2-seater, offered in two bed lengths. Probably a great workhorse vehicle!
Now at 11" ground clearance in the TRD PRO--capable!

If the next gen 4Runner has a 2.4L turbo-four with an 8-speed automatic, preferably also making the hybridization optional, I could live with that one day. Expect the new Tacoma MPG ratings to absolutely dwarf the current 4Runner MPG ratings--the new larger Tundra/Sequoia already do.

The TRD Pro is beautiful. 326 HP and 465 torque! Can't wait to see the price and mpg. In Canada the Taco TRD Pro is $61,300 + freight and taxes, assuming this will jump to $70,000.
The TRD Sport has an ugly and massive plastic shroud under the front. TFL already mentioned it has 9 bolts to take off. The limited is full of chrome and fugly.
I think the Trail Hunter with that long box is too long overall. Should look great with a 5 foot box.
No TRD off-road model on display oddly enough. Hopefully it's similar in looks to the Pro.

If the 6th gen 4Runner improves this much in looks and power I will have a hard decision to make. I know if I were on the fence about ordering a 2023 Tacoma TRD Pro or waiting for this reveal I would be at the dealership tomorrow morning placing my order for the '24. The big question will be reliability and price.

I just saw a Facebook video of a guy walking through one. The interior definitely got an upgrade and a Bronco esque mode switching system

Just a quick peek so far, but the more pedestrian TRD Offroad, no-imax, with Bilstein shocks incorporating 8000-series tech is the deal for me if I were to go Tacoma. This assuming actual decent skids are available, 33s are direct fit, and same clearance/angles as Pro/Trail.

If this can accommodate 35s without serious mods....

They did great. Really excited for this and a huge positive for what the next 4R will be. They went from rear drums and leaf springs to innovative suspension seats. Who would have thought Toyota had it in them?

I also really like that they gave the TRD Offroad a suspension upgrade with resi Bilsteins and other things.

Can't wait to still dream about getting one at MSRP in two years. Or 5.

I guess I'm not impressed. It's nearly exactly what j expected minus the front locker. No new surprise engines or features other than the TRD pro seats that are unusual and the sway disconnect. Top spec engine is only 278 hp steady state. Just matching base ranger engine with low output tune. No front locker. Small windows and high hood. And only the 8AT? why no 10 speed? Will likely not tow or haul well.

No PHEV or EV version. No EV mode for water crossing. No inverter to power camp or home.

Interior is okay. Very busy.

High points are bigger tires and looks like better clearance. Maybe fit 35s? I think the non TRD model looks really good. TRD pro and especially trail hunter look very overland expo at the mall to me. But the suspension is great IMO.

Odd that they kept leaf springs in some trims.

Pricing and mpg will be interesting. My bet is $35-80k and 20mpg.

Overall Toyota went crazy with farkle and milquetoast with powertrain.

I am very curious how these Bilsteins compare to the Foxes. The latter are internal bypass, so pseudo 2.5s anyway. The Bilstein integrated bump stop is super effective.

Probably even I could do well enough on just 2.0 Bilsteins with remote reservoirs and the de facto integrated bump stop functionality :)

I very much doubt the Foxes would have any real life advantage.

Heck, I have put on permanent hold the front 8112s idea because with stiffer springs and 6112s plus the 8100 rear I think I am already at the safe limit for speed on trail in AZ/UT let alone mountain states.

"No new surprise engines"?

Does Toyota/Lexus have a turbocharged 2.4L Hybrid anywhere else in their lineup? Oh, wait, the Lexus RX500h. But is this the same engine?

As someone who shops Toyota specifically because of reliability, I like that their engines are tried and true. If this is the same engine that's going in the next 4Runner, I'll probably still wait a couple of years to buy one, just to wait out all the teething issues.
