It seems clear from the published prices and estimates of unreleased prices, Toyota is "good with all of their models having significant price overlap", this is further evidence of the credibility of the quote I heard on the Plano grapevine.

When you add additional models with significant feature overlap, it's only natural for the prices to overlap. "Cannibalization of sales" does not really seem relevant any more, at the end of the day, you're still looking at models with the Toyota badge and they potentially get a sale and keep you from going to the competition.

This is the key thing in my opinion. There are not really that many "full line" manufacturers left now, especially given how the Americans are relying more on truck and SUV sales. Toyota wants you in a Toyota or a Lexus. It doesn't care if its models overlap. It doesn't care what Toyota you buy. It just wants to give you no easy excuse to not at least consider a Toyota.

This is the TRD OR premium at $52,000 before freight and the same vehicle is $58,800 here is Canada. Jon shows the Tacoma price sheet from his dealer with all of the available trims and fees for premium etc. It does appear that you can get a TRD OR in a more base model with a 5 foot bed in the US. In Canada if you want the cheaper version you have to buy a 6 foot bed. The only option for a 5 foot bed is the TRD OR premium.

I only mention this because I'm trying to speculate what trims will be available and at what price for the new 4Runner. I would only buy the 6th gen if I could get an off-road with the new hybrid system and at a decent price. If it costs as much as a 1958 LC250 no thanks.

Anyone know if the electric motor will take some of the stress off of the turbo? I'm not a mechanic or engineer but one would think the electric motor might reduce the usage of the turbo?

I can't speak for how Toyota will do it. But I know with our BMW, the engine in our PHEV is the same as in the 40i, the b58 inline 6 w/ turbo. However the engine is slightly detuned in the 50e b/c it can give you better performance than the 40i with less stress on the engine due to the larger battery assist.
The 40i is a "mild" hybrid but what I've learned is that its a small battery primarily used to overcome the turbo lag.
So yes, it is possible Toyota would do the same.

OK. While overall customer retention may be maintained, that doesn't guarantee that each trim level will sell enough to be profitable because of the intra-brand cross shopping and, once built, it's a sunk cost. Entire trims might be selected out because the general public prefers another trim from a different model in the same price range.
 
FWIW - in the Tundra the hybrid has a different engine. I'm not sure how much different, but the short block has a different part number for engines with hybrid and without. There may be more differences than we know from just looking at basic spec sheets.

It seems intuitively that the hybrid system would significantly reduce the short term power draws and the result would be reduced turbo spool. And ideally it'll use a lot less fuel - so that points to less engine demand and less use of the turbos. From a basic engineering standpoint - a hybrid would probably have a different turbo and different engine. There's no reason the hybrid needs to have a twin scroll like the new turbos (or any other variable geometry). It shouldn't need to spool the turbo quickly at low rpms to build power. That's handled by the electric side. But the engine is quite small - probably around 150hp without the turbo, maybe 50hp at cruising rpms(?) So it probably lives somewhere in lower boost most of the time on the highway hybrid or not. My uninformed guess is that the turbo sees less intense use in city driving but otherwise pretty similar use and the lifespan would end up being pretty similar either way. On a long mountain grade the battery will deplete quickly and it's all up to the engine either way. I think that's where the turbo will see the most heat and it'll be the same for either powertrain. Once these eventually make their way into circulation someone will need to do a side by side towing and driving test and take some temperature measurements of the turbo to see if the hybrid gets as hot as the non-hybrid.
 
Instead of taking over Nakatomi Tower again this year can Hans and the boys seize the Tahara plant and demand Toyota reveal the 6th gen 4Runner...

I was at one of the Phoenix metro Lexus dealers and they told me they expect the initial vehicles in around March 2024. Apparently wait list for them at this dealership was about 30 people deep right now.

Finally drove the TX500H also. Nice car, but ultimately not sure is worth $80k to be honest.

I am going a different direction to replace my Rover it looks like, but more on that another time!
 
Anybody else wish an Overtrail was available with the 3rd row (even if optional)?

To me the Overtrail+ is a great package, but I wish I could get an occasional use 3rd row to go with my offroad goodies.
 
Interesting! Any info on delivery dates? In August when I placed a LC deposit was told 2 years!

When I look at those GX550 prices I think that they will be inline with Canadian LC250 pricing ie $65K cdn to $74K cdn. That would put the new 4runner at $60K cdn to $69K cdn. GX 550 84kcdn to $93K. Don't have any inside info but looking at insane canadian new vehicle prices this could be close.

Current info is that the GX550 and LC250 deliveries will not hit dealers until the April - June time frame. If you were told two years, it just means you signed up with a dealer who is clueless or already has a long waiting list, time to shop around for a new dealer.

This is correct. I just got confirmation of this a few days ago. Toyota originally was looking to have the new units arrive earlier than April but that is no longer in the cards.
