Best things to look for during a Pre Purchase Inspection

Guys and/or gals,

Checking out a *salvaged* 2000 4Runner tomorrow. Salvaged because a large tree branch fell on roof towards front. I saw pictures of it provided by owner. All repairs have been done, no leaks (will test this). Sunroof works. 2x4 (have no use for 4x4; just need a car I can sleep in when camping). 95,000 miles, limited, looks to be in good shape, leather seems to not be cracking. And is white, my preferred color. 3900 OBO. Said it doesn't pull, shake, etc. Will take it for an extended drive tomorrow getting up to 75mph.

I am taking it in to a 5-star rated on Yelp auto shop for a full inspection first thing Saturday morning. Besides their inspection, is there anything I can visually inspect myself to see if everything looks good? The guy is selling because he's in the service and being relocated to the South.

I don't believe the timing belt has been replaced. What is the cost of this? Link below:

Also, salvaged does not bother me as the car is only 3.9k OBO and will likely keep until it is dead as a second car. Not worried about resale whatsoever.

Not a whole lot goes wrong at 95k. Timing belt and water pump are not a super critical part to have fixed, though it can cost up to $1,000 to do depending on where you go. The can last up to 150k though. The water pump will leak before it fails so it give you a clue when it's time. I've yet to hear of a timing belt actually break on these engines.

Your mechanic will help spot anything else really. Fluids should be clean and not dirty. Do check the lower ball joints or ask your mechanic to, maybe even jack the truck up and have him try and wiggle the tires to check for play.

Somewhat off topic, but IF a sunroof does leak on one of these cars, does the water get diverted through the sunroof drains and drain underneath the car?

Given it had a damaged roof, the sunroof is a concern if it does eventually start leaking down the line. I suppose I could always just caulk it shut if it was bad enough. Mainly want to keep water out of the car. Thanks.

That's still new mileage wise,

I had 180,000 when I bought it, I had a compression check but I doubt you'll need that.

That is awesome to know. I kind of figured that was true. Had a friend own one of these with 144k and he never replaced those things.
