Best tires on snow/ice AT (Revo/KO/Yoko?)

I should have added that when I bought the GYSAs last year that I did go up to the 70 size tires and have had not 1 issues with them. They took a little bit of getting used to, and as mentioned added about a half-inch of clearance to the truck. I have also had NO ISSUES WITH RUBBING and I have turned these things hard without issue.

When I say getting used to, they are noticeably bigger than the Dunlops are and fill the fenders out more, which actually looks better - especially on the SE that I have. It gives the truck a more rugged look and better fits the personality of it - then again opinions are like @$$holes, so take that with a grain of salt.

I forgot all about the Nokians when I was looking but I cannot remember why. Might have slipped my feeble little mind. My wife would have bought them in a heartbeat, being as she is the queen of cheap and very proud of her Finnish heritage - the Fins can do wrong by her. LOL

I guess my biggest issue with them is that I plan of moving out west in a couple years (Montana mountains area) and wanted a severe weather (Mountain & Snowflake) rated tire so I stuck with a rated tire and I do not think that the Nokians are. Just an extra level of comfort for me, ya know

More great pictures! I like to look of the 70's. I did a search for GY SA's vs Michelin LTX AT2's which took me back to this site, really nice to see a pic of the GY SA's in the 265/65/17 and they still looked pretty good. Plus that's less likely to effect my mpg's so I'm still thinking that's my tire.

The Costco website did have a nice little bit on how Michelin's get the best gas mileage and if I were staying in WA I would have probably checked them out. The Goodyear Silent Armors may not last as long but I like the fact they have the severe weather rating. As for mpg's, I guess I'll find out.

Of course then I mentioned to a friend I had seen something about Alaskan's having two sets of wheels, one for winter tires & one for summer tires. He's big on toys so he chimed in and said I should get Blizzak's for winter and then I'd have an excuse to get those FJ Cruiser wheels...

O.k. where/how & how much for the FJ wheels? I was telling my friend who is pushing me to get new wheels I wished the 4Runner had come with those.
I would love to get my hands on some if they aren't super expensive. Of course I would love to get my hands on those tires and the lift and....

Keep an eye out for used FJ wheels, maybe on craigslist or something similar in your area. I think quite a few people that are upsizing their FJ wheels to something aftermarket are looking for good home for their old wheels. There is a black 3rd gen in my neighborhood that has the FJ wheels on it and it looks great.

Did you happen to go from the stock Dunlops to the SA's or from another brand of tire? I was also curious what you think of the on-road handling and ride quality on the SA's vs. the Dunlops. I understand that the SA's are an AT tires and that you have to sacrifice a bit of on-road manners, but I've been curious to find out to what degree.

I keep hearing about the drop in MPG, but I think I'm over that. If I wanted good MPG, I should have bought a Prius. :

I'm going to chime in on the Dunlop tires when maybe I shouldn't but I had them on my Tacoma and I dumped them as fast as I could. They had horrible traction and wore out quickly. Maybe I just had the wrong one. Just one opinion.

As for any AT tire, I've had AT's of different brands on Fords, Subaru's, Saturns, and Toyota's they are the only way to go if you like to check out the wilderness or even if you just like to camp and ski in standard areas the roads lead straight to. Don't even think about going with AT's just pick which AT works best for you.

As for mpg's I agree. When we picked up 4Runners we were thinking of other things. Still I will attempt to look at my wallet knowing gas will only go up & I will be exploring as much as possible. Trade offs trade offs

I drove dunflops in Buffalo 30,000 miles( 3 years) with no problems. I slid forward on a hard brake only once or twice. I've been thinking SOME of the bad word of mouth for dunlops comes from folks with wrong air pressure or agressive driving IMO. I will be getting revo's this fall.

Well as with all tires everyone has their own opinion / experiences. I can however say these were the tires that came with my truck when I purchased it, air pressure was fine, and I am not an aggressive driver. Maybe like Goodyear there are good and bad tires in Dunlops line up.

I have another friend who picked up a Tacoma after checking mine out & he had the same problem, as did everyone who borrowed my truck when it rained. Mind you we're not talking losing control, or sliding all over the road, but burning out while trying to baby my way out of my neighborhood was annoying. I've never had problems with any other tire so bad experience for me.

Anyway, so your a Dunlop fan...works for me.

I think what Dire Wolf is trying to say, and correct me if I'm wrong, is that the Dunlops aren't as bad as people often suggest.

I haven't experienced any of the horror stories you often read about, but maybe I'm just lucky. My experience with the Dunlops is that they handle good at highway speeds and are quiet, they perform fine in the rain, and they are decent (not great) in the snow. Basically just an average HT tire. If we were all driving Camry's with a similar tire to the Dunlop, I don't think you would hear as much complaining about the OEM tires.

The only reason why I am looking into new tires is because I think I have a great truck, with just OK tires. I think the tires should match my truck's ability. And like many people on this board, I don't think the stock size tire fills up the wheel wells the way they should. Also, I think I would have a little more confidence off-road with a decent set of AT tires.

BTW, the Dunlops got me in and out of this mess with no problem. After about a foot of snow fell that night, I scraped my windows, hoped in, and pulled right out on the first try. Not bad for the 'ol Dunflops. :

I never ran my Donlops excet to the tire dealer....lol.I wanted them switched to 70 series because they looked to small and not aggressive for my driving style.

Glad they worked and got you out of that mess.
