Best TPMS Option

I just had the shop slap a set of winter tires on my OEM rims. Didn't have time to shop around for a complete tire/wheel setup at the moment. Anyhow come spring if I can land a new set of rims I will probably mount the non winter tires on those and just swap in the future instead of paying to mount and balance each season.

I was looking at the programmable TPMS sensors and did not know which frequency the 5th gens use? 2014 specifically. Have people had negative experiences with these clone type TPMS? I want to just be able to swap by myself instead of having to do an extra step of programming/shop each time.

I guess the other option is non programmable TPMS sensors and the ATEQ or similar but if I do not have to buy a programming machine I'd rather not. Are these more reliable or what pros do they offer vs. a cloned setup? (I read on another post that perhaps these can tell position, pressure psi and temp...)

Any brand or complete setup recs?

So, in the Spring you will eventually have 8 wheels and tires that all have TPMS sensors. Your 2014 will only accept 4 (the older 4Runners would handle 5 for the spare and perhaps the Limited still will). If you store the extra 4 tires and wheels near the vehicle you may have an issue with it getting confused. At least you will have to reprogram every fall and spring. Another option is to put your winter tires on steel wheels without TPMS and tape over the light until Spring when you swap back. Steel wheels are cheaper and no new programming is required. Also Winter can be tough on nice wheels and sensors.

Well current is just unmount, then remount and balance each season. I actually had nails in 2 separate tires that I didn't notice so it's nice to actually look at them closely each year. Otherwise it costs me $100 each change and an hour plus in time. Not too bad.

I hadn't thought about the car getting confused. How far does each sensor read? I think if I throw them in the basement vs the garage it'll be a tiny bit farther in distance but if they are cloned and throwing out the 'same' signal will it matter? And if they are totally different sensors then the truck shouldn't be looking for them at all correct? That's why I was asking if people had experiences with the cloned sensors so I can spend the money on those instead if doing the unmount, remount dance... I think the break even point (not including rims) would be about 2 years or 6 changes...

Takes under 5 mins to scan and upload the sensor IDs to the ECU.
The ECU can only interpret the sensors that had the IDs uploaded.
Previous IDs get erased from the vehicles ECU.

I have no experience with the clone type sensors, but the Denso and Dill brand work flawlessly.

I've added an Autel 501 to my collection of tools. :tinfoil3:
Allows me to check the PSI of each vehicle in the fleet without loosening a valve cap or getting in the vehicle.
I have found the sensors to be as accurate as my dial psi gauges.

I don't know what the range is but there have been posts where guys ran winter tires while their other wheels with sensors were stored in the garage and the sensor light would reset when they got close. You could remove a wheel and roll it away from the car until you get the light I guess to find out.

However, with as well as tires hold air these days you could get by just checking the pressure weekly on steel wheels without sensors.

I looked up the Autel 501. Would this be the only thing you need to also register new sensors to your ECU if you swapped TPMS?

The Autel 501 is all I needed to keep my wheel swaps going. It connects to the OBD2 port, to upload the IDs.

There's probably newer models, but I recently updated the firmware (USB/PC), which included 2018 Vehicles.

I suggest using Denso sensors, since they are OEM and as cheap as any other. Sensor data include psi, temperature, and battery status.

OT - We have a Pioneer deck with Idatalink Maestro in our Tacoma, it displays all 4 sensor PSI on the screen, with other OBD2 data.

Other folks have chosen to disable the system, I prefer the continuous monitoring, especially since I don't get to see the fleet as often as I used to, and PSI can be checked in an instant, in this case. :wink2:

I don't know how useful it would be everyday, but I like the idea of keeping an eye on my tire pressure digitally. My last vehicle had a dash readout and I checked it constantly.
 
I had the winter wheels/tires TPMS sensors programmed for the same four original codes. Go to a good tire shop and have them read your four codes. Put new programmable TPMS sensors with the same four codes in your new wheels. Change them in my driveway with no issues, no warning lights or re-programming. Truck reads the same four codes in winter and summer.

And on my Limited, there is a fifth TPMS in the spare. It is probably a duplicate of one of the other four.

I would only buy factory TMPS sensors if you are going to buy another set of wheels. I have ATEQ programmer and works fine. I think you can disable TPMS but like having working TMPS on my car.
