I think it's absolutely absurd to buy something based on how much you can sell it for later. Just perpetuates this terrible throw away culture and drives the American populous and governments further into debt with the banks and corporations.
I hate to break it to you folks, but there's nothing unique about your new car. Matter of fact, there are millions of unsold brand new cars parked all over the world that don't have a home.
Sorry guys, but we're all suckers... I choose to hold onto a $40,000 vehicle, pay it off, and enjoy the fact I bought a car based on longevity, not necessarily its shine.
But what the hell do I know anyway? Back to your regularly scheduled programming...
That is some tortured logic! Equating a good that keeps it value with a "throw away culture" seems counterintuitive.
BTW, I have been driving a 2002 4runner since January 2005 so don't lump me in with the other guys.

Naw man not quite. I'm equating BUYING the good for the future reason of reselling with a throw away culture. I'm no saint and I waste my fair share. But it's on a much smaller scale than 10's of $1,000's on cars. Its like buying a sofa to say "oh jeez! We could get a few hundred bucks at next year's garage sale!" And then go ahead and consume further. Allowing companies to then pump out more furniture once yours goes to the land fill.
Buy what you want, by all means. But don't tell me it's because you eventually want to get rid of it. That's admitting you have no intention of long term ownership. Which is a form of a throw away culture in my eyes. If people held onto stuff longer (like Ohhh I don't know, let's say HOUSES or even smartphones) and didn't purchase just to make money back later, I can safely correlate a different societal lifestyle of appreciation and pride in ownership.

Lot of FJ's for sale, doesn't mean anybody is paying what is being wishful thinking pricing. I was asking for that price too, and many dealers said, "can't help you we are too far apart on the price".

Don't let the old guard trolls here discourage you from getting your pro... For some reason they love to derail the pro threads. Like what has been suggested already your best bet is to open up your search up to 500 miles if you are up to that. A one way airline ticket and driving it back home is a lot cheaper then paying a premium over MSRP.... Good luck with your search.

i think the thing that strikes the "old guard" as so weird is that this is primarily an enthusiast forum whose members like to modify and tinker with their 4Runners. we know what we're buying: a dead-reliable, if slightly boring, BOF off-roading vehicle that's a great platform to build on and, properly maintained, will last and last. the prevailing argument used to be whether it made more sense to buy a Trail, or to simply get an inexpensive base model SR5 and build from there.
with the launch of the TRD Pro, we're seeing a new buyer profile that is paying MSRP—or more—for what any reasonable person has to admit is just an appearance package. moreover, many "justify" their choice based on the pipe dream of better resale value when, specious an argument as that may be, most of us bought our 4Runner because we want to modify them (reduce resale value) and hold onto them. so it seems kinda out of place to hear "resale" bandied about so frequently.
if i'm not mistaken, even LawnDart, who's dumped more $$$ into his 4Runner than most of us would ever dream, has admitted that if he knew then what he knows now he wouldn't have based his build on a TRD Pro.
i would never literally dissuade anyone from buying whatever they want. everyone's circumstances, wants, and needs are different. but when repeatedly hearing the plea "how can i avoid paying more than MSRP for a Pro?" there's a fair degree of eye-rolling and the snark comes out.

It's simple really ... and age-old. It's called The Law of Supply and Demand.
Unique model + unique color = low supply. Doesn't matter if it's cars, or gasoline, or sneakers, or bottled water. It's not called a "Law" for no reason.
I don't get the snark either ... why should I care what someone else buys? I'm happy for him - being successful enough to afford it.
The answer to OP's original question is; you're just going to have to shop your ass off, AND decide just how badly you want it.

Still too early to label it as a pipe dream or specious in my opinion. All evidence I have seen to date indicates otherwise, of course that could change.

The superbird was a bit more than just a unique color and some badging. The superbird was the equivalent of the buying a C7.R corvette. A TRD Pro is not a performance package in the same sense. It's mid grade shocks, and appearance farkle. Don't get me wrong - appearance is a big part of buying a new car. I didn't even ever test drive a 4th gen 4runner because I hated the styling - still do. I'm sure they're great vehicles. I often lust after a Land Rover LR4 - even though it's a horrible vehicle, because I think they have great styling. If you really must have the special color - go for it! Just don't be confused into thinking that it's going to be worth more than every other color in a few years. The only color I personally like is Inferno - but since it didn't come with KDSS, it was a nonstarter.
What you may not be aware of this, but that the TRD Pro isn't even the best offroad model of 4runner. The TRD OR with KDSS is. If there were any model that would be unique - it's the Trail/OR with KDSS. But none of them are special. All GX460's and LC200's come with KDSS too. All 4runners will have similar used value in 5 years. Condition will have a lot more to do with resale value than sub-model. And if you actually use it offroad - you're not going to be getting top dollar on resale.
On the plus side - the resale on all 4runners has historically been really good. What would kill the resale is a turbo 2.7L 4cyl in the 6th gen. If the 6th gen gets 25mpg on the highway and has 350hp/tq, the 5th gen values will drop significantly. Much like the 2nd gen did after the 3rd gen 5VZ was light years better.

I would widen your search about 500 miles or as far as you're willing to drive. If flying one way is too expensive, often a one way rental is only like 150 dollars.

Just got word mine is built, shipped and due by months end. Trading my beloved quicksand mainly because I like new car smell and won't cost me jack squat to reset my odometer to 0.

But unfortunately that is just a pipe dream....All the money should be bet on the 3.5 that seems to be the universal motor for Toyota these days... Been there done that owning a 17 Taco Pro. If they go that route then all 5th gen 4R's will continue the very strong resale value.

I think as long as you don't end up paying more than msrp, you'll be ok. I told myself this would be the only time I would even consider paying msrp for a car. At the end of the day, you have to ask yourself if this (trd pro) is what you really want. It's all a personal choice. Sure, haters will hate. Whatever, it's your own money. Why should we really care, right?
For me, I paid msrp for my cement pro. $43.5k and with ttl, roughly $48k. Fast forward 7 months and 10k miles, I realized the vehicle wouldn't work for my family. We primarily needed the flexibility of having 3 rows and although nice to have, the trd pro was beyond what I would ever need or use. So last week, I sold it. I got 45k for it and because my buddy is a gsm at a local toyota dealer, I let him do the paperwork for the private sale for $500 and he sold me a brand new SR5 Premium for $38k OTD. If you do the math, I "lost" $3500 to drive the pro for 7 months. Comes out to exactly $500/month lease. My wife was able to live with that and I haven't been kicked out of the house.

As long as it takes I guess. I already have a '15 TEP with KDSS. If the 6th gen is better - I'll consider switching. Heck, if they offered a '19 model year with a V8 and 8 speed auto - I'd probably trade for another 5th gen.
