Best Year Model of 4th Gen??

I have an 06 LTD and love it. Sexiest stock rims out there. I would have to say the 08 would be the better year due to the Trac off button.

Doozi. What is this $60 mod you speak of? Is this a dealer/oem type mod. Or is it the VSC off mod that many on the forum do?

06-08 was the peak as mentioned above. 09 shows a dip in quality on CR - tail end of a model can sometimes be like that - my guess is the distraction of retooling for a new model can impact the last year's production.

Plus I think consumer reports gives info about as accurately as a ret@rded kid......they have the new grand Cherokee rated higher than a 4runner. Ha!

I would guess a result of the global economy? My 04 is solid as a rock with only 60k miles.

Usually, the last year of model production is the best as all bugs should be down to minimum. What was the last year for 4th gen 09' or 10'? I am not sure.

2008 v6 4wd for sure!!!!! and colombo, the 09' was the last year for the 4th gen.

2009 Trail Edition - Torsen and both a center and rear locker. Yes, you give up some creature comforts of the Sport and Limited Editions, but overall the 09 Trail is the best in my opinion (wished I had one). And you know what they say about opinions...

I got a 03' SE V8 back in 2006 with only 16k on it, and i cant complain about 1 thing on the rig. Even though it did have the frozen front calipers, the fan resistor went and the tranny needs to be flushed (unsealed), i dont care. I kept up with the maintenance and its running like a champ. I love the textured grey bumpers & side cladding and the sport bumper trim on the front.

My 08' has the VVTI V8 and it has more pep, but it also has less leg room (power seat vs the 03's non-power...has more room), the 08 has the pipe step bar and roof rack, and i like the 03's step a bit more, only because (1) when its covered in slop after a drive, i have to make for damn sure my pants dont hit it on the way out of the ride. The step on the 03 is tucked back a bit more, i dont have to sweat that, and (2) when going down the highway in the 08 with the pipe, it sounds like someone's spraying an empty tube with a gardenhose...that hollow-metal sound, and the trim isnt as protected as it is on the 08.

Either way, i love both these 4Runners.

Toyota's rating did state that but they had to revise their rating for the following years so they actually have the same engine and tune as the 06-09.

I do agree the 2005 V8 is the best model, updated engine but still has the flat fender wells.

I have heard people say that "they are all the same", but the actual v8 engine is different in the 05 vs all other years. Not only is the AIS unique to that year, but the pistons are physically different in the 2005 only. 03-04 are similar, 05 is different and 06-09 are different. Since I personally removed the pistons from my 05 and compared them to other year pistons I can confirm that this is true. As far as maintenance goes...any year EXCEPT the 05 v8 would be the best in my opinion.

For what it's worth, you can put the LED taillights and projector headlights and such into the earlier 4th gens without an issue.

My 2008 is so rock solid I'd hate to ever have to part from it. My previous 4R was an 04 Sport V8 4WD. I loved it as well and should have never sold it. Minus the updated engine and transmission on the 06-09 V8's, mechanically speaking they are just about exact clones. I will say that my 08 has a good bit of little changes that are hard to find if your'e not looking for it. Mostly in sound, rattle prevention etc.

Looking at buying a 06 with 180k. It is the V6. I have a 5th gen and looking for something else to beat around in. Are the 4th gens pretty solid as far as engine and transmissions go?

I am also looking for a good lower mile 08 limited v6, its the time for 4th gen hunting. I am curious about if the 08 limited has an aux port because I haven't seen picture of the aux port on the radio. Just making plans for when the dealer find my truck if I have to put a double din in right away or can get away with just rocking the JBL system with an aux.

What do you think makes the 05 v8 different with maintenance vs any other 4runner v8? Just curious to that opinion?

The aux port is located inside the center console storage box thing. It's not easy to see.
