Best Year Model of 4th Gen??

Can you expand on this claim?
Not saying you're incorrect but would be interested to learn more about this as google searches don't have any information to back this up. Most info I'm finding says all 4Runners are Japan assembled and other sources say until 2010. Every 4th gen I've seen had the J in the vin to indicate Japanese assembly.

If you have to remove and work on the engine in the 05, the AIS valves are literally behind the engine down toward the firewall. Those valves are impossible to service should anything go wrong unless the entire engine is removed. All other years have this problem corrected (or no AIS on non-vvti).

I would personally go with 2006 to 2009 models. If I was really picky I would choose either a 2008 or 2009 because you can turn traction control off.

Yea they're rock solid. I don't have much experience with the v6 as I have the 07 v8 but the tranny is solid and I haven't heard much complaint with the engine. After all it's a yota. You take care of it and it will take care of you.:thumb:
No not the pump, the valves after the pump toward the firewall. Pump is up front under intake manifold, the valves are seriously not able to be serviced by anyone. You can't even get a wrench behind them to remove them from the block.
If I get another 4th gen, it will be an 06+ v8.

From my understanding those valves and that system are the exact same parts and location from 05 to 09. I haven't heard of or seen any evidence that they are different. Do you have anything to show this? Im not saying they arent unbelievably difficult to service, I just believe that's the case on all the years not just 05. The only differences between 05 to 09 are cosmetic.
There are huge engine differences between the 05 and the 06 up v8s. First of all the pistons are physically different on the 05 vs every other year and all of the ais parts are in different locations on the 06 up vs the 05. I know this because I personally removed the engine from my 05 and saw the differences in piston design and the ais system components when I tried to use parts from an 06 up v8 4runner and realized they do not fit at all.

Though I absolutely love my 2006 SR5 V6, I CANNOT stand the "Amy Winehouse eyes" headlights it came with.
I wish the front of the car was a bit "flatter/thicker". But just a matter of personal opinion.

I believe you, this is just the first ive ever heard of it.
If you are bored, a parts guy at Toyota can look that up for your and will tell you that there is a mid-year manufacturing difference for all the gaskets in 05. If you have the early 05 (like I do) there are so many differences that the gasket kit is a different part number and even the intake manifold is a different shape. I believe that the late 05 trucks are just the same as the 06+

pretty interesting.. I know there are a handful of other cars that have mid year mechanical changes and differences, didnt know the 4runner v8 specifically was any different, especially to that degree.. I believe mine was built in august 05 IIRC

Do you have pictures of the pistons along with specs for comparison? I have always thought about upgrading pistons in the V8. Your information would help me some.
